Make sure not to have only read Moby-Dick out of Melville's oeuvre. You've probably already read Bartleby the Scrivener, but Billy Bud, Pierre, any one of his early schlock novels, and a smattering of his poetry are also all must-reads for a fuller view of Melville.

dubliners is based. i hated frankenstein tho. pessimism is fine but i just dont get what reason there is to be enthusiastic about it. like even if its central theses are true what reason is there to believe them. the greeks were at root pessimists but they built such an impressive edifice around that pessimism that they overturned it.

>Why House of Leaves?
I admit, it is entry-level pomo fiction. it is one of the most stylistically accessible works in the genre second only to shorter books like TCOL49 and Cloud Atlas, and its (seeming) reliance on genre sensibilities helps keep readers from feeling lost. additionally, it's most obvious use of pomo is its physicality, which isn't challenging in the slightest to simply read through; in fact, much of it actively helps paint a better picture in the mind of the reader. if you wanted to introduce someone to pomo, this is the book to choose
me personally, it was the first one I read, and I quickly moved on to Calvino, Pynchon, Wallace, Borges, McCarthy, Gaddis, Schmidt, Pavic, et cetera, but then after all of that I returned to HoL to see if it still held up. it did, and I quickly realized it's not just entry-level, but also exit-level
HoL is the ultimate expression of everything postmodern. it is the logical conclusion of the style, going as far as it can in every possible direction without being literally unreadable like Finnegans Wake and MZD's follow-up Only Revolutions, or not even being a book anymore like Composition 1 and Tree of Codes. the unreliability is brought to the point where one can't even tell which character (of five candidates, no less) is meant to have written the book in the first place; the physicality is so meticulously planned that people still find hidden messages and alternative readings 19 years later; the Pale Fire esque footnotes are so fleshed out that they not only overshadow the main text, they absorb it entirely
I could go on, but I'd rather keep this relatively brief. it's essentially the most reddit book of all time, yet it hides some of the most decipherably complex writing ever seen in the genre under its friendly, quirky surface. I'm not surprised that your non-reader sister got her hands on it, but please don't get hung up on it. nothing gets more postmodern than this

I mean "you people" to mean "anyone who feels romantic attraction and centers their lives around pursuing it". my experience in life so far seems to indicate I'm aromantic, and even if I do eventually fall in love, I doubt I'll ever consider it something that I need at all times. I have no idea how allos seem to be dysfunctional on their own

Incredible. The majority of people here is not even 20 years old.

This is who is judging you, /lit/. These people probably started reading a couple of years ago under the influence of this butanese dough-kneading noise echo-chamber building online discussion website.

- Labyrinths by Borges
- I don't read many primary texts, I've read a fair amount of secondary. I like the ideas of the Pyrrho and Epicurus. In terms of actual primary, something shit like The Prince or Art of War, though those barely count as phil. I used to read Marx and Benjamin but I grew out of that shit and now hate it. In terms of general non-fiction my favorite text is probably The Evolution of Desire by David Buss
- Not sure, but for simplicity's sake I'll say Je Te Veux by Satie performed by Jessye Norman
