I don't like the way I talk and I don't like the way I write. It's bland, inexpressive and always seems off, and I really do mean always. I think it stems from being and esl. What can I do to change this?

Work on building your vocabulary and enunciation. In rhetoric, the delivery often counts for more than what you're saying.

Another rule of rhetoric is to pause. Take your time. We are harsher with ourselves than other people are inclined to be. There's no rush to respond immediately, and taking your time (in both speaking and writing) can be a valuable tool in aiding articulation and building a listener's attention.
