YOU TELL US, SINCE IT WAS YOU WHO PRONOUNCED IT.

>> No.1364289

knee-et-zeus-chuh

Nee-chee

That's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.

>> No.1364291

Well, clearly you must have heard me and can now repeat it.

>> No.1364306

this is how most people think it's pronounced, unfortunately it's wrong
In academia, it's neechuh. 2nd response is correct response

I usually say
"Nee-Chee"
It annoys my philosophy professors.

Germanfag reporting in, these people are correct.
Some will try to make the z audible, so they go and say neets-chuh, but neechu is fine, too.
Ignore the consonant salad, it's mostly ornamental.

How do you pronounce Goethe without sounding like an idiot?

>> No.1364348

>>1364335
you pronounce it like "gertie," the shortened form of the name Gertrude

>> No.1364358

>>1364348
You know, +2 internets for not being a prick. Just, good job.

I've had dreams about being in gym class with no pants and English class with no way to say Goethe.

>> No.1364360

The German ö can not really be written out for an Anglophone to pronounce.

>> No.1364361

>>1364348
Really? I've always heard it as more of like a "Gurt-uh." More of an A than an E on the end, I mean.

>> No.1364362

There's no R in Goethe.

>> No.1364367

It doesn't matter how you pronounce it as long as it's not Go-eth.

>>1364362
>>1364362

You're right!

>> No.1364394

>>1364335

Guuh-tuh. Although "uu" is not really an adequate substitute for knowing how to pronounce ö.

>> No.1364396

My prof pronounce it neechuh

>> No.1364402

/ˈniːt͡sʃə/

There's sounds that come pretty close to ö/oe, though.
The vowel in worth, earth etc. is close enough for someone who doesn't know the language in the first place. Just leave out the r following it and you're fine.

Oh, and don't pronounce the th in Goethe like the th in "that", it's just a normal t.
