I should revisit Native Son sometime, last time I read it was in high school and I found it to be really compelling to read from start to finish, although I can't say I remember much of it off the top of my head. Protag (black) suffocates white girl and gets sent to court to be sentenced to Death for it is basically how the plot went as far as I remember, but I'll be damned if Richard Wright's prose wasn't compelling to read (at the time).

Bud, Not Buddy and The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1965. (very well done children's books though)

Octavia Butler's Kindred and Song of Solomon from Tori Morrisson are good.

Then the non-race-bait classics are by Alexander Dumas such as The Count of Monte Cristo (which is a masterpiece).

Many people itt complain that book by black authors are too focused on race. But remember, not caring about race is only possible when you're not black (at least in the US). If you're black about half your life is a constant reminder that race still matters. So while that complaint is understandable that's like complaining that book by men are too often about women. The answer there is read gay men (and for blacks, the answers is to read non American and even non European blacks).

I quite like Uncle Remus stories & other sorts of fables. Of course there are Booker T. Oroonoko is required reading for any black born in the Americas and is the national epic of Surmain. Alexander Pushkin book "The Black count" is about the struggles of a black man in all white society, likewise they are Thomas sowells books which are excellent even if a little questionable history wise. In addition several of family members( grand parents, great grand parents) have publish autobiographies and these are a constant source of inspiration to me.
