I like it more when people can grow with their particular skill, even more so if there are specific ways that they unlock the full potential of their skill and if there are huge drawbacks if not used responsibly.
For example you mention the boxer can level skyscrapers when punching, how strong would he be without his gloves ?
Maybe someone that can level skyscrapers with their punches also pulverizes their arms due to the force of the impact if used at max power.
Maybe using their ability makes them incredibly powerful but uses an huge amount of physical energy similar to anaerobic exercise and can cause them to pass out if pushed beyond their limits or worse.
The best kind of magic or power systems are the ones that have defined drawbacks for using them.

It has led me to a life which I'm content with, after years of listening to more base instincts that, in hindsight, were inferior as they were momentary and only worthwhile in a nihilistic viewpoint.
Also, fiction writing does hold a more privileged position with me than most, probably, because I've been reading and writing since I was young and my life has been surrounded by books. During the day I'm an editor, at home I write for pleasure. I've always been a stickler for quality over quantity. One great book can mean more than one hundred stock cliche books.

So apparently there's a theme week for sci-fi and fantasy going on over at Goodreads. They've listed what they consider the the current breakout authors of the genre. Have you read any of them? Are any of them good?

I've read Ada Palmer, Katherine Arden and Charlie Jane Anders. Palmer is absolutely fantastic, can't wait for her to finish the last Terra Ignota book. Arden is good enough that when she put out her next book I will at least consider reading it. Anders is shit, generic and generally bad writing.

I've heard enough good about Ninefox Gambit that I consider reading it.

My first experience with science fiction novels was Asimov this week. The guy was a genius and a scientist. I have a feeling that Asimov is special and that I will get disappointed reading other science fiction novellas.

Is there science fiction literature as excellent as Asimov's Foundation trilogy?

I just went through the list and I think that one time or another most of the titles in that list have been mocked by this general. The rest looks like YA crap. The very first book (Rosewater by Tade Thompson) is described by one 5 star review as Neuromancer meets Star Wars.
Poppy War and it's sequel have just been made fun of in the previous thread. Ditto for Kings of The Wyld, Baru Cormorant (which is onions incarnate) and Ninefox Gambit.
Most of the other titles were on my radar but the premise was not really interesting enough for me to pick it up. It's the usual YA/fantasy/soft sci-fi mix that's popular every year.

So I picked up The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, featured in a Goodreads list of upcoming fantasy authors, posted here >>13628559.
From the technical point, regarding the writing, it's at best mediocre. We are talking about the run of the mill character driven, fluffy soft sci-fi.
Where this book really drops the ball is the fact that this is basically a write up of how reddit imagines the future, with a healthy dose of "current year" guilt tripping.
We are talking about the novel in which the only character acting as an asshole and a coward is white (described as pink). Everyone else is some shade of mystery brown.
We have a midget proud of his physical deformity chasing down a chassis for his AI masturbatory aid. We have a society who's primary source of protein seem to be bugs (I am getting flashbacks of that Washington Post article about how shit eating bugs are excellent source of protein). A society on Mars that kept meat as a staple of their diet is actually called cowardly. And then come the gender pronouns, the triumvirate of xir, xer and they.
Destructive climate change making Earth uninhabitable, pacifism, exceedingly human aliens, the list just goes on and on.
I have no idea how this is supposed to be something ground breaking. What a shitty list.

I'm sure someone's got the image macro handy, but basically Herbert was forced to write the sequel by his publisher, then he started to have fun with it again, he put out God Emperor (book 4) to finish the series, but then ran out of money or something so started writing a new trilogy to finish the series. He died after writing book 6, meaning the series ends in a really weird place with no book 7. His son then moved in and raped his corpse.

Basically, read up until book 4. If you still really need more, push on to book 6. Don't touch anything with Kevin's name on it.

A question regarding writing your own novels in scifi and fantasy genres.
Is it wrong if you flipflop the genre of a series ?
What I mean by this is that I build up to scifi setting and due to plot reasons it gets changed to a more traditional fantasy setting (the scifi stuff is still there but more in the background). The story eventually builds back up to a scifi setting afterwards.
Would something like this be a bad move ?

Can be done but only if you plan it out meticulously. You can't just up and change it. And even if you do it right chances are people won't like it anyway because they came for one thing and you've basically bait and switched them.

try it out if you havent read it.
it seems to be exactly what you are looking for.
it basically switches between a fantasy and sci-fi setting constantly. eventually it intermingles both. second book is a bit iffy but overall its fantastic.

This really isn't something that should change, unless you are writing a very long story. If by changing settings, you mean it's a sci-fi story and they are trapped somewhere without technology or they're sent to a planet without it, that's not uncommon.
If you mean that they get temporarily isekai'd and it's a traditional fantasy world for literally no good reason, that's dumb and you probably shouldn't do it.

>>13632081
I'll most likely update the genre descriptions and the blurb as to what happens in each novel so people know what they're getting into.
I'm not looking to put them up for publishing (either through one of the big 5 or self published) until I finish all the novels I am working on, at the moment I'm at 16 seperate storylines but I can condense them down to fit two novels into one bigger story keeping it to about 8 or so novels (in some novels I use the same character but X years later so I can easily condense those without confusing the reader).

>>13632090
It's more that it changes from a high tech kind of scifi (transhumanism and getting ready for FTL travel) to what remains of society after what is essentially the end of days and how society rebuilds afterwards. It just felt wrong in a way to file it under scifi than fantasy I guess. They're still on earth but most tech is either dead or they don't really know how to use it anymore.
I suppose it is a mix of both so should I just leave the genre as it is ?

>> No.13632161

>>13632116
>I suppose it is a mix of both
Then it's both, it doesn't necessarily need to fit into either perfectly. Sci-fi with fantasy elements, or post-apocalyptic fantasy, doesn't much matter unless you shill one way or the other too hard. If the description implies that there are multiple settings or large scale changes happen, that's all you need.

Three-body problem series

i just finished reading Book of the New Sun and I have a question kind of relevant to its status as a genre chimera. Its clearly pretty easy to write a science fiction book in the trappings of fantasy (genetic engineering=mythical beasts, aliens=elder gods, etc.) Has anyone ever attempted to write a fantasy book decked out in the cliches of fantasy? If so, what do you think it would look like? I’m thinking there’s something you could do with magic resulting in interstellar travel, but something localizes entirely on one planet would be a lot harder.

What i most enjoyed about this series was how different sides of humanity are portrayed over different time-periods and how the different environment a species evolves in can have massive impact on how a society forms.

For example the Alien race in the series, the Tri-solarans, evolved in a planet that has a chaotic day night cycle, due to the planet revolving around 3 suns. They communicate trough thoughts that everyone in a certain range can listen to, this ,leads to the aliens initially having a 100% transparent communication with the humans, but after learning more about their racial differences each race changes how they approach each other.

The author also brings up a lot of cool technologies, the aliens after learning of a star that has a stable day/night cycle (earth) decide to invade earth, but since they are over 4 light years away, and earth civilization evolves exponentially faster than the tri-solarans, the aliens unfold a proton to cover their entire planet and write circuits inside of it, making an extremely powerful artificial intelligence that has the size of a proton, and they send it over to earth, to mess with basic science reysearch, so the humans cannot evolve science, making their invasion easier.
