carrol was a mathematician, the story just shows that there can come about from modus ponens deductions (p implies q, p is true so q must be true) a sort of infinite regression, where in order to draw the conclusion that q is true from p implies q and p, one has to take for granted the fact that the form of the argument itself is valid, and if you try to assert the fact that the form of the argument holds, you have to take for granted this new fact, repeat ad infinitum
