While I'm on the subject, little more than a century ago "Onanism" (an archaic term for masturbation) was considered to have noteworthy degenerative physical and mental side-effects and opposition to it was one of Victorian society's pillars. There's an article from the 50s, an interview with historian A. Toynbee in the NYT (obviously of much lower quality contemporaneously) where he mentions the severe sociological effects that "lowering the age of sexual awakening" has on society as a whole -- it destroys the system of incentives that made liberalism (in the broadest sense of the term - philosophically founded on self-mastery and not self-indulgence) a viable system of human organisation.
