Most works of philosophy can be legally downloaded for free online because the copyright has expired, but most fiction still needs to be paid for. Thus, the contention that fiction is the poor man's philosophy is simply ludicrous.

fiction is intrinsically better than philosophy as it is cool and creative. so is maths but not physics. it's transcendence. it's moving on from our ex girlfriend that was reality. this post wasn't cool until that sentence and now this sentence made it uncool again. that's proof that fiction is cool or at least cooler.

People can access philosophy, as well as any other subject, through fiction. Many wouldn't hazard or even know about many philosophers unless they chose to study more from a source that entertained them (not counting being forced to read from school, but actually developing an active interest and pursuing it.)
