Is he right? I just finished pic related and it depressed me. Has anyone read this and had a similar experience? I just kept thinking "so what's the point?" If everything is just getting better, we are getting more peaceful, what's there left to do? Why do people seem so discontent and irrational if the Enlightenment supposedly triumphed?

Yep.

Just as Nick Land solved philosophy liberalism has solved society.

Best time in history. Count yourself lucky.

There are only two worthwhile ideologies left. New Labour / Bill Clinton style ideology, with its open borders. And white nationalism. All other ideologies are dodging the major issues.

I haven't read Pinker's books but I'm sure they're good attempts to promote the first of those ideologies. Of course, his dodging the JQ is more instructive than if he had mentioned it

I finished this book recently as well. He's definitely right that the media makes our world look a lot more dangerous than it actually is. Which was essentially the whole point of the book.

The reason why people feel so discontent to some degree is that we are born accustomed to the safety and take it for granted.

It can all break down. The particular conjunture that makes life expectancy go up and homicide rate and other bad stuff go down is a relatively recent development when you put it next to the whole timeline of humanity.

Besides, improvements weren't accomplished by people standing by just thinking stuff would get better on it's own. Get out there.

People are discontent because brains are there for finding and solving problems. And the way they do it was selected for over a long period of time that wasn't a lot like ours. It's hard for us to think clearly about global and distant trends. Short spikes of criminality and small outbreaks of disease (like ebola, pig flu and bird flu) get disproportionate atention compared to longer term issues (including long term problems like climate change). This also goes for economic trends; we try to read too much into noise, we overrate recent, particular gains and losses, and we underrate long-term, network gains and losses.
