To be fair, it could be argued that it doesn't even belong on /lit/, let alone in /sffg/. Even the characters in them realise they're playing a table top game or mmorpg, and the focus is on leveling and game mechanics rather than plot, prose or character development. More of a read along of someone pretending to play a game than anything resembling literature. Seems more appropriate for /tg/ to me.

I thought it would be best to post it here rather than make my own thread for it.
I'm currently in the middle of writing scifi and fantasy novels.
However in one of the novels I'm taking notes from biblical stories and using them as a setpieces for the stories in that particular volume.
Would this be in bad taste ?
This volume could be scrapped entirely and not affect the larger story at all but would give a good sense of scope of things to come (the parting of the red sea, the plagues, the resurrection of jesus to name a few) which is why I was interested in using it.

>And if you don't have at least one leftist/queer/trans/black character in it rhey won't even look at it.
That won't be much of an issue either honestly since one of the themes is the degeneration of mankind as time progresses.
Things like trans, gay or queer would be nothing in comparison to the amount of degeneracy 250 years from now, much like how things that would be considered degenerate 250 years ago are common and even celebrated these days.

One of my favorite romances in fantasy was in Legend by David Gemmell. A man and a woman stuck in a crappy situation end up falling for each other because of the time they spend together. It's so hilariously simple yet it's completely realistic and believable because that is how people fall in love in real life. A real life example of this is two pro-wrestlers went on a first date (a man and a woman) and at the end of the date the male pro-wrestler straight up asks the female pro-wrestler to marry him and she said yes and they've been married for almost 25 years. Pic related is them.

Ok, decided to flesh out and fully commit to the story within the enchanting setting.
Everything and almost anything can be achieved through enchantments on non-living matter, which will affect living matter.
However, the most basic and cheapest enchants are the weakest, and here comes the Restriction & Benefits effect, in which an enchantment's potency is affected by what and how much you're willing to sacrifice and restrict so that you can increase it. Also there's only one enchantment per single object.

The society evolved in such a way that people are entirely dependent on enchanting as much as we are dependent on electricity. Take enchanting away, you throw the society into dark ages level of decay and chaos. The protagonist is a magically enhanced doppelganger capable of transforming into any human being at will, and the plot revolves around a successful coup against his former employer. The reason, his employer used to work for a certain someone or something known only as the Rose, who is not only immune to the effects of enchants, but can nullify these enchantments and in addition, is able to sway the minds of humans to its will. The protagonist is therefore also a tool of the Rose by association and needs to clear his name before working out who the Rose is and what are it's reasons for throwing the world into chaos.

Sounds good? I'm already some 15k words in.

Well the world is a cold earth (it has plot relevance). One of the most common enchants are heat floors. Relatively cheap since they don't need to be very hot, just enough to warm the house. Speed pants/boots are also common for the sheer need of transportation, however for greater effects people are willing to sacrifice quite a bit for super speed. Strength items are also common and basically always needed since it's still a physical society. Then come heat clothes, water-proof clothes, greater vision glasses, adhesive boots, there are all sorts of things. Anything you can think of, literally. Now, that's all practical and fine, and I decided on whom exactly can enchant, so I made enchantment a 3-part work.
First comes the skill itself, which is gnostic in nature, doesn't need thought, only pure knowledge and technique. In a way, it's like mathematics.
Then comes the material itself, and I decided upon a magical substance which, when acted upon, creates the enchantment. So you can't enchant a boot, but a boot which has this particular material inlaid in it.
And the 3rd part comes in the Restriction, and what you're restricting for the enchant to work. That being said, only a society of monks within the world can do enchants. Well everyone can if they meet those 3 requirements but the monks own the material monopoly, own the knowledge of this practice and teach their students in their temples, and do the enchantments on command, which will place the Restriction burden upon the client, and not the monk initiating the enchantment.

Now add in the Rose and his ability to remove enchants and you have yourself a plot. BotNS is still my favorite book though, and I don't expect the plot to carry it. I'm confident in my prose, but I'm even more confident in the themes and characterization. I'm actually quite happy with what I've been writing so far. If I can keep up the quality, I have faith in what it'll be once finished.

And I didn't want to feel like part of a movie or a series of movies where some plot is just going to be set up for the whole story to play out, and the whole thing can be taken apart and reassembled later on without any friction.

I love that this story doesn't have any major plot lines or characters, it's just two guys who find themselves in a spaceship, going somewhere in space, and there's no clear end for it.
You can basically keep reading and thinking about them for pages and then they're out there somewhere. It's all pretty straightforward but I'm loving the simplicity of it.

On the /sffg/ web novels chart in >>13584439 I'm familiar with 7/8 of the listed works. One has levels and classes, another has classes.

Unsong is about a world where Christian/Jewish mythology is actually true, the geocentric model is how the universe works, and we crack open the sky and start to break reality when we launch the Apollo rocket to the moon, leading to all sorts of fucky stuff happening like Kaballah ritual magic starting to work.

Mother of Learning is a time-travel fantasy novel. Character faces enormous challenge, gets put into a time loop where he has to Groundhog Day it over and over, honing his skills and getting further over time.

Pact is a fantasy novel where the fae and their magic are real and you can make bargains with them for power. They all hate humans and they're all basically contract lawyers who will fuck you over if you give them any conceivable loophole.

Worm is about superheroes, except grimdark, and there's never a happy ending.

etc. You have no idea what you're talking about.
