>Author rants against unfair and oppressive power structures for his/her career, but turns out to be a highly authoritarian bully in real life.
>Author places emphasis on empathy and helping your fellow man, but turns out to be a sociopath IRL.
>Author preaches sexual liberation, but is a pedophile who had sex with underage girls IRL
>Author preaches equality and freedom but also supports dictatorships
How come almost all of the most important thinkers of the 20th century were such giant fucking hypocrites? And these were just the mot famous ones, i also personally know people who are specialized in ethics but are extremely evil people who respond with glee when they hear of the death of someone who was part of a political/social class that they disliked.

No, he/she usually is opposed to what he/she calls pedophilia aka being attracted to young post-pubescent teens but then he/she turns out to be an actual pedo.

What’s hypocritical about this?

The grander the ideal, the greater the potential for hypocrisy.
This doesn't apply to just thinkers of the 20th century, but all centuries.

Because sociopaths want to be famous and make money and feel-good humanitarian agenda is the most widely accepted in the West. And obviously they don't actually give a shit about it. They get away with it because people don't really care about principles anymore, we're more concerned with maximising our own comfortability.

Most of this happened back in the mid-20th century when ideals were still high

Shouldve said "preaches sexual liberation as healthy and normal and wont lead to a slippery slope situation with pedo's"

to completely believe something in your philosophising being, in your 'idealist' state in your second, disembodied personality, does not preclude the antithetical beliefs presence in your common-sense and 'realist' being.

I think it's the author's expression of apothesis; the godlike exemption they hold themselves above their intended audience. Rules for thee and not for me. No sacrifice despite being "tortured" people.
Plus it's a lot easier to write morality than it is to live it.

Compared to reading a book by say monks who actually live what they preach; describing the difficulty of such path and how he overcomes is temptations and sufferings.

A good question and something I personally have struggled with. Used to think I was this morally flawless person who could work hard and end up being the symbol of purity and goodness. Since making mistakes though I've lost a lot of that ambition, and am still working out how to go about writing about life knowing I'm imperfect etc. I think the key is not to sermonize in whatever you do, or at least don't do so from the perspective of someone who has never sinner.

Much like the loudest wailers are not the most miserable, but exhibitionists, profiteers, masochists, the biggest givers are likewise not the best of us. Socially sanctioned misery and charity and their interaction are wholly theatrical.

>For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
