>Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read.

>It is the story of this Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous entertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan – a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe.

>Although Jane Eyre is outwardly of plain appearance, she possesses an indomitable spirit, a sharp wit and great courage. She is forced to battle against the exigencies of a cruel guardian, a harsh employer and a rigid social order. All of which circumscribe her life and position when she becomes governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr Rochester.

>When Dorian has his portrait painted by Basil Hallward and wishes that he would stay young while his picture changes, his wish comes true. In exchange for this Dorian gives up his soul and as he ages the bad deeds that he commits are reflected in his painting and not him.

pastiing from last threadd

Two questions:

What are some really good fantasy short story collections? Multiple writers. The only good one I've read is Swords and Dark Magic.

Second question would be if any interesting new author showed up in 2019 - my favorites are Wolfe, Malazan guy, Abercrombie and a short story from CJ Cherryh, not her sci-fi. Oh and Glen Cook.

Anybody here actually read any female oriented fantasy (or a book authored by a woman) and liked it? I feel like I'm alienating myself by keeping away from it, but every time I try it is a disappointment. Rarely I read something that does not involve the completely ordinary lead being chased by 3 super ripped shifter vampires, or alternatively one that is a badass warrior that don't need no man and was also raped previously. I can count on one hand the number of books I've read that were written by a woman that does not fall into one of those.

I feel like this is mostly a problem with modern works, but I'm not really well read on older literature to be sure. So, any recommendations? So far there's Ada Palmer on my backlog, but otherwise I don't know where to go after that.

Right now I'm trying Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Some good, some bad, we'll see.

I mentioned the Red Sonja novel I read in the previous thread and enjoyed it. It was written by two men over 30 years ago though so that's probably why. And if you want to read a female author that's actually good then check out Leigh Brackett. Specifically The Sword of Rhiannon and the Book of Skaith series. I would even suggest Last of the Amazons by Steven Pressfield even though technically it isn't fantasy though it definitely reads like fantasy.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel here, but you'd have to hit Forgotten Realms novels for that I reckon.
The books by Erin M. Evans (Brimstone Angels, though there is this handsome devil) and supposedly most of Elaine Cunningham's stuff is readable/enjoyable though I personally haven't read anything if her books yet.
Then there's Lisa Smedman, her House of Serpents trilogy is entertaining (male protag, female BBEG, "exotic" setting inside the FR setting, not bland Swordcoast shit) and stuff by Rosemary Jones, especially City of the Dead (female airhead-protag, grounded male sidekick) is really entertaining and fun.

Stainless Steel Rat.

The Blackcollars series by Timothy Zahn is great. It's basically about how humanity's last hope for freedom from the alien conquerors is a team of commandos who are basically ninjas with future-tech.

Wasp by Eric Frank Russell is about a operative sent to cause havoc on a alien-ruled planet.
https://archive.org/details/RusselEricFrankWasp/page/n1

The second two books in Glen Cook's Starfishers series are about a spy. The first one is a relatively quick reading space opera so they're easy to get to, though I didn't like the series much as a whole. (The fourth book is a unconnected prequel that's basically Das Boot In Space and is great)

I disqualified Lud-in-the-Mist and Neuromancer because they're simply to well known in the thread. If you want to discuss them, just do it. Snow Crash is to long (would undoubtedly have made it, however, if it were fewer nominees).

Have any more thoughts about last months book? Feel free to voice them. I personally feel like it suffered from to many "good" ideas. Like the author came up with a bunch of cool stuff and then could not bring himself to leave anything out, leaving us with malplaced stuff like the lion rescue and the hardass Erwin becoming cozy and cuddly with the president.

>> No.13576397

This isn't really /sffg/ related but I don't post on that Tumblr board /co/, so. The Boys was one of the two comics I ever read and I hated that it took a good premise (the logical conclusion to a superhero setting, namely "what if superheroes were arrogant power-tripping dicks who cause collateral damage all the time?") and muddled it and ran it into the ground (LOL THEY HAVE CONSTANT CRAAAAZY ZANY ORGIES, BTW EVERYTHING IS ONE BIG CONSPIRACY BY ONE EVIL COMPANY).

The show is a bit better but it still doesn't really satisfy my interest in the premise: surface level "good guys" who are actually corrupt, getting their comeuppance. I wanted to see more "bro I can do anything I want, I'm Hawkman" niggers getting beaten to death by vigilantes with crowbars. Anyone have any recommendations that fit the bill? Would also like to see Jedi systematically murdered for being smug cunts.

Black Company comes close, when they manage to kill or defeat a wizard using good tactics.

Just finished the original mistborn trilogy.

It just didn't click with me. I realized towards the end I was just reading it for the twists.

The world doesn't really seem properly realized. Doesn't make sense that about 90% of the world are slaves, metal pushing/pulling as its presented would never let you fly around like they do as you've nowhere near enough control of the angles. Emotional alimancy seems like it would be impossible to counter if you just forcefully pushed and pulled on emotions to induce shock on them.

Is the sequel trilogy worth reading or his other works?

not to mention that his entire career is an example of how not to write unreliable narrator.

Only listened to it on audiobook so can't post it, it probably goes on for several pages.

It's basically an argument made by someone from the generic warrior women tribe that there's no such thing as a father. The mother has complete control over the pregnancy and everything about the baby comes from the mother. The whole concept of 'male mothers' is presented as something hilarious and a joke.

The gary stu MC, who is literally the smarted guy in the series, gets btfo and is completely unable to provide a good counter argument and basically it's treated that the warrior women is right.

It was really painful to listen to. Kingkiller Chronicles has such a well realised world and is beautifully written but holy fuck the weird views on women and the Gary Stu MC make it tough sometimes.

What does any of that have to do with it being an apt analogy?

You should resist calling people virgins and concocting elaborate hypotheses about how all a person's faults stem from their virginity or lack of virility. Not because it's hurtful or anything, just because it's a weak and lazy form of personal attack mostly used by women (who can't think).

It is not a retarded analogy at all. The point isn't remotely that the girl was a "girl next door" type. The point is that she was a girl you were deeply invested in, for reasons deeper and more special than the quick thrill that people typically want from beautiful women, at a naive and impressionable time in your life before you even knew how jaded most men and women are and how depressing sexual objectification can be. And then the next time you see her, she's been totally subjected to precisely that jaded, horrible reality, so that in the moment of recognition you are forced to juxtapose your naive sweet platonic love and the ugly, mundane sexual objectification you are used to as an adult, and watch as the latter completely crushes the former.

It's not exactly Dickens but it makes sense just fine conceptually. The hinge of the metaphor is the perversion of something pure and innocent, specifically to create something that still has "value" but only in an inferior and baser way that is an insult to the original.

I have this idea of a magical setting in which everything is done with enchanting and the "restriction and benefits" effect.
Say an enchant on your shirt can give you strength, so you can easily lift a grown adult with one arm. That's a really basic strength enchant, most can take it and their body won't suffer much.
But then here comes the Restriction and Benefits effect, and you sacrifice an eye, your hair and two fingers. Suddenly you get the strength you punch through a brick wall and lift a car. But punching a wall with your fists is just going to mash your hand into a mushy pulp, so you add a toughness enchant on your gloves, which makes your bones and flesh very tough in exchange for your ears.
Or you can downright become indestructible if you're willing to sacrifice enough.
But sacrificing is not only done on your body, and it's a deeply personal endeavor.
You sacrifice a random guy, you'll get a mild strength enchant.
You sacrifice your mother, you can suddenly demolish a building. You sacrifice your brother you become as tough and indestructible as steel.
You sacrifice your cat, your car and a kidney, you get flight.

Suddenly you're superman.

I just want to write a short easy story in this setting. Will you guys read it?

So yeah, "girl next door you had a crush on as a kid".
And no, it's still shit. A book isn't changed by an adaptation, however much you might dislike it - the movie is a separate thing made by different people. Never mind the ridiculously snobbish idea that books aren't commercial products and movies are nothing but.

You do realize that in real life there were people villages / tribes that believed some very stupid shit, and you as an outsider would laugh and point because you were educated. Well this book shows pockets of the world where enlightenment hasn't reached. I don't know why people (retards) take issue with this part of the book when there are other things to get mad over. When you argue with pol, do you think you changed their minds with facts when they wholly believe that they are right? Why do you think a secluded tribe that doesn't really deal with outsiders would change their minds of decades of belief because some skinny outsider came and said it was wrong.

Why is it that some violations of "show don't tell" not bother me at all (adverbs for example), while other cases get under my skin? I was kind of bothered when I read about the author coming up with ideas first, then trying to find a way to fit them into the story. One of his ideas, for example, was “a man goes for a jog but gets attacked by a bunch of dogs”. While he was able to fit that into the story well, it did feel a little weird when Carolyn was super insistent that the guy HAD to go for a jog (“Why am I going for a jog?” “It just has to be that way!”). Reading about the author’s way of writing kind of made me realize that the scene was really only awkward because the author refused to give up the fact that the guy needed to go for a jog. Little things like that bothered me.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts was when we saw the inside of the library for the first time. It was pretty interesting how the author hid it from us without me really noticing - I didn’t realize that I’d never seen it until Carolyn has to sneak into the library blind. Until then, I just assumed that the books were stored in the chambers where they lived.

Terra Ignota is some of the best stuff I’ve read recently. I picked it up after someone mentioned it in this thread, and I wasn’t able to put it down until I was done.

I think the first book was my favorite because there was a lot more worldbuilding and mystery. The worldbuilding was fantastic, and I appreciated how almost every mystery was resolved in a super satisfactory way. I liked book 3 a little less since most of the worldbuilding and mysteries were completed/resolved, but everything else about the book kept me hooked.

It’s definitely a quality series, and I wish it received more discussion on here. also sniper a qt

Mankind solved a global energy crisis by punching a hole through the world using a fuckhuge collider and literally tapping into the primordial soup of existence between every reality.

The horrors (called Subdimensionals in-universe) tried wiping them out before they could restructure their society to fully utilize it because it is poison to them.

They exist within multiple points of time simultaneously, and cannot be destroyed as long as one instance persists. If you expose one instance to this energy, all instances collapse into that instance and it is forced into a 3D body that can be BTFOd the same way any ayylmao can.

They also use reality-warping extensively to the point where it is as instinctive as walking is to humans. Of course, exposure to areas contaminated with this exotic energy literally burns away their ability to reality warp, and the more severe the exposure the less likely it is to ever "grow back" so to speak.

There was a large chamber there, hollowed out of the body of the giant as if some huge internal organ had been removed; the walls were slick, tinted red as though the flesh still pulsed with life. Veins stood out like blue pillars. But it was not the structure of the chamber that had caused the Voidal and Grabulic to gasp—it was the things within it. For here in choked abundance there were frightful creatures that had the appearance of hybrids, as though men and non-men had been crossbred and mutated to produce the most outlandish of beings. Their outer characteristics were hideously exaggerated, and as the two men looked in at them, they saw that they were all female. Some were lovely of body, but had sub-human faces, others’ bodies were wildly grotesque but had beautiful faces; still more were unspeakably horrific. All were chained, some linked to the walls of the chamber by membranous filaments, flowing through which was a familiar crimson fluid. Sizes varied—there were dwarfish, squat-faced beings and tall, gangling spiderish things. Some there were that crawled in dark corners, away from the pulsing mass of bodies near the light.
“What anteroom of hell is this!” cried Grabulic.
Larg sniggered unpleasantly. “Hell, master? There is no hell here. This is the Keep that rules over the Ocean of Souls. There may be other Gods with their places of paradise and their hells, but not here.”
The Voidal scowled down at the scrawny figure. “This is the work of Necral?”
“It is. I told you—his mind is as debased as his rotting Keep. This is a place he puts aside for his private, uninterrupted amusement.”
“Then he has indeed created a hell for those unfortunates. Who are they?”
“Hybrids. Bred from souls that he has secretly culled from the Ocean. He tortures them and moulds them for pleasure, then discards them when they displease or bore him.”
“Discards them?” echoed the Voidal. “He returns them to the Ocean of Souls?”
“Nay. There is a place, deep down in the frozen entrails of the Keep. There, among mouldering bones, the discarded ones are tossed, too crippled to complain. They soon reach their own oblivion.”

Damn.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Sanderson.
There are times when I think he's a decent writer - Warbreaker was surprisingly good from start to finish, I could almost believe he's a sober and seasoned fantasy writer after reading it.
But then he comes back with shit like The Reckoners - which is one of the most embarassingly bad series I've ever read. It feels like it's written by a self published 15 year old anime fanfiction writer. It's adolescent drivel, all the characters are cringey as fuck, the dialogue and humor are the fucking worst. Edgy fucking 3 piece suit fedora wearing katana carrying holy fuck just kill me.
Most of his other novels are somewhere inbetween. Elantris was largely good until the last act, where it abruptly becomes retarded. Mistborn starts out good, and abruptly becomes generic anime fanfiction halfway through. Stormlight has been largely good, excluding the ending of book 2 which was fucking embarassing, but then he gets back on the horse and book 3 returns to the largely sober style of book 1.
I just don't get how someone abruptly becomes a terrible writer in the middle of his books. Is he intentionally dumbing down his books to try to appeal to a broader audience? Is he actually a terrible writer, but is sort of okay at mimicking better writers but occaisionally slips when he gets too excited? It's fucking baffling.

Even then, being trans is completely unrelated to writing quality. Just look at the matrix

You don't have a problem, what you hate is self-contradiction. It's fine if you say someone runs awkwardly because that adverb IS the illustration. Calling a character who acts like a retard smart on the other hand is wrong because their stupidity has already been illustrated.

That said, it's not bad by necessity. It can be used to humorous effect or to highlight how a character views themselves. The Wizard of Oz is pretty well known for using this, while /sffg/ hates The Name Of The Wind despite executing this perfectly because their collective lack of reading comprehension means they don't notice this when the main character outright says he embellishes his stories about himself

That particular example is very bad because there is no reason for a character to say that. Even if you are in a situation where it serves the story better to tell it rather than show it you can convey the same information through description, other characters' thoughts, etc. A lot of people write dialogue like they're writing a movie or TV show though where characters have to say everything they're thinking or else the audience will never hear it.

There's also the Powder Mage series if you want something that is vastly different to your typical fantasy setting, it's also just very good generally. The Spellslinger series is decent light reading, it also departs pretty heavily from the typical fantasy structure (not to be confused with the SpellSINGer series, which is also pretty entertaining in its own right, but it's definitely the product of an LSD habit.)

So take your "seminal works" to the proper board weeb. You can discuss highschoolers, bloomers and cute cyberpunk things without dragging the quality of discussion here.

Cyborgs are hard sci-fi though. Androids are more cyberpunk.

>> No.13583959

>>13583950
You rarely ever see self-proclaimed hard sci-fi with widespread cybernetic enhancements, especially in comparison to cyberpunk works. Full custom-built bodies are a logical next step from cybernetics, and at that point, if your "androids" are functionally equivalent to humans, there is little distinction beyond whether one was born or made.

The monthly vote is currently at a tie. Someone do something or I'´ll have to toss a coin to decide.

>> No.13584011

>>13583959
Right, but then you're getting more into that grey area between cyberpunk and more classical science fiction. It's a genre built on aesthetics. Having some robotic enhancements eg. a robotic arm to replace the one lost in the Yakuza/Neo-Seoul war of 2036 or something, is pretty cyberpunk, but going full cyborg feels too futuristic. Post-cyberpunk? Would you consider Hannu Rajaniemi's stuff cyberpunk?

Let's just read Snow Crash. Those books suck.

>> No.13584065

>>13584011
Cyberpunk, just like many other genres, has degrees of just how cyberpunk it is. On one end of the spectrum you have near-future pseudo-realism with minimal fantastic elements. On the other end, you have Raiden from MGR.
