What are some really good fantasy short story collections? Multiple writers. The only good one I've read is Swords and Dark Magic.

Second question would be if any interesting new author showed up in 2019 - my favorites are Wolfe, Malazan guy, Abercrombie and a short story from CJ Cherryh, not her sci-fi. Oh and Glen Cook.

Anyone else enjoy the seemingly benign and simple creature to actually be a force of godly proportions?

Anybody here actually read any female oriented fantasy (or a book authored by a woman) and liked it? I feel like I'm alienating myself by keeping away from it, but every time I try it is a disappointment. Rarely I read something that does not involve the completely ordinary lead being chased by 3 super ripped shifter vampires, or alternatively one that is a badass warrior that don't need no man and was also raped previously. I can count on one hand the number of books I've read that were written by a woman that does not fall into one of those.

I feel like this is mostly a problem with modern works, but I'm not really well read on older literature to be sure. So, any recommendations? So far there's Ada Palmer on my backlog, but otherwise I don't know where to go after that.

Right now I'm trying Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Some good, some bad, we'll see.

I mentioned the Red Sonja novel I read in the previous thread and enjoyed it. It was written by two men over 30 years ago though so that's probably why. And if you want to read a female author that's actually good then check out Leigh Brackett. Specifically The Sword of Rhiannon and the Book of Skaith series. I would even suggest Last of the Amazons by Steven Pressfield even though technically it isn't fantasy though it definitely reads like fantasy.

Follow the Ideal omnibus reading order.

You can skip Cordelias Honour if you want, they're sort of the prequel books for the main series and the lead characters are the parents of the MC from the main part of the series. That said I do like them and don't recommend skipping them.

The books by Erin M. Evans (Brimstone Angels, though there is this handsome devil) and supposedly most of Elaine Cunningham's stuff is readable/enjoyable though I personally haven't read anything if her books yet.
Then there's Lisa Smedman, her House of Serpents trilogy is entertaining (male protag, female BBEG, "exotic" setting inside the FR setting, not bland Swordcoast shit) and stuff by Rosemary Jones, especially City of the Dead (female airhead-protag, grounded male sidekick) is really entertaining and fun.

The Blackcollars series by Timothy Zahn is great. It's basically about how humanity's last hope for freedom from the alien conquerors is a team of commandos who are basically ninjas with future-tech.

Wasp by Eric Frank Russell is about a operative sent to cause havoc on a alien-ruled planet.

The second two books in Glen Cook's Starfishers series are about a spy. The first one is a relatively quick reading space opera so they're easy to get to, though I didn't like the series much as a whole. (The fourth book is a unconnected prequel that's basically Das Boot In Space and is great)

Is Lord of the Rings an easy book to read? I'm thinking about starting it but I'm not confident enough on my english to do so, so I'm also considering buying a translation. I thought asking here would be better than creating a whole thread to ask this.

Have any more thoughts about last months book? Feel free to voice them. I personally feel like it suffered from to many "good" ideas. Like the author came up with a bunch of cool stuff and then could not bring himself to leave anything out, leaving us with malplaced stuff like the lion rescue and the hardass Erwin becoming cozy and cuddly with the president.

This isn't really /sffg/ related but I don't post on that Tumblr board /co/, so. The Boys was one of the two comics I ever read and I hated that it took a good premise (the logical conclusion to a superhero setting, namely "what if superheroes were arrogant power-tripping dicks who cause collateral damage all the time?") and muddled it and ran it into the ground (LOL THEY HAVE CONSTANT CRAAAAZY ZANY ORGIES, BTW EVERYTHING IS ONE BIG CONSPIRACY BY ONE EVIL COMPANY).

The show is a bit better but it still doesn't really satisfy my interest in the premise: surface level "good guys" who are actually corrupt, getting their comeuppance. I wanted to see more "bro I can do anything I want, I'm Hawkman" niggers getting beaten to death by vigilantes with crowbars. Anyone have any recommendations that fit the bill? Would also like to see Jedi systematically murdered for being smug cunts.

Black Company comes close, when they manage to kill or defeat a wizard using good tactics.

It just didn't click with me. I realized towards the end I was just reading it for the twists.

The world doesn't really seem properly realized. Doesn't make sense that about 90% of the world are slaves, metal pushing/pulling as its presented would never let you fly around like they do as you've nowhere near enough control of the angles. Emotional alimancy seems like it would be impossible to counter if you just forcefully pushed and pulled on emotions to induce shock on them.

It's basically an argument made by someone from the generic warrior women tribe that there's no such thing as a father. The mother has complete control over the pregnancy and everything about the baby comes from the mother. The whole concept of 'male mothers' is presented as something hilarious and a joke.

The gary stu MC, who is literally the smarted guy in the series, gets btfo and is completely unable to provide a good counter argument and basically it's treated that the warrior women is right.

It was really painful to listen to. Kingkiller Chronicles has such a well realised world and is beautifully written but holy fuck the weird views on women and the Gary Stu MC make it tough sometimes.

I have this idea of a magical setting in which everything is done with enchanting and the "restriction and benefits" effect.
Say an enchant on your shirt can give you strength, so you can easily lift a grown adult with one arm. That's a really basic strength enchant, most can take it and their body won't suffer much.
But then here comes the Restriction and Benefits effect, and you sacrifice an eye, your hair and two fingers. Suddenly you get the strength you punch through a brick wall and lift a car. But punching a wall with your fists is just going to mash your hand into a mushy pulp, so you add a toughness enchant on your gloves, which makes your bones and flesh very tough in exchange for your ears.
Or you can downright become indestructible if you're willing to sacrifice enough.
But sacrificing is not only done on your body, and it's a deeply personal endeavor.
You sacrifice a random guy, you'll get a mild strength enchant.
You sacrifice your mother, you can suddenly demolish a building. You sacrifice your brother you become as tough and indestructible as steel.
You sacrifice your cat, your car and a kidney, you get flight.

Suddenly you're superman.

Why is it that some violations of "show don't tell" not bother me at all (adverbs for example), while other cases get under my skin? I fucking hate it when one character describes another in some way (especially as "clever" or "cunning"), when said character has done nothing whatsoever to demonstrate those qualities.

I was kind of bothered when I read about the author coming up with ideas first, then trying to find a way to fit them into the story. One of his ideas, for example, was “a man goes for a jog but gets attacked by a bunch of dogs”. While he was able to fit that into the story well, it did feel a little weird when Carolyn was super insistent that the guy HAD to go for a jog (“Why am I going for a jog?” “It just has to be that way!”). Reading about the author’s way of writing kind of made me realize that the scene was really only awkward because the author refused to give up the fact that the guy needed to go for a jog. Little things like that bothered me.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts was when we saw the inside of the library for the first time. It was pretty interesting how the author hid it from us without me really noticing - I didn’t realize that I’d never seen it until Carolyn has to sneak into the library blind. Until then, I just assumed that the books were stored in the chambers where they lived.

Terra Ignota is some of the best stuff I’ve read recently. I picked it up after someone mentioned it in this thread, and I wasn’t able to put it down until I was done.

I think the first book was my favorite because there was a lot more worldbuilding and mystery. The worldbuilding was fantastic, and I appreciated how almost every mystery was resolved in a super satisfactory way. I liked book 3 a little less since most of the worldbuilding and mysteries were completed/resolved, but everything else about the book kept me hooked.

Mankind solved a global energy crisis by punching a hole through the world using a fuckhuge collider and literally tapping into the primordial soup of existence between every reality.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Sanderson.
There are times when I think he's a decent writer - Warbreaker was surprisingly good from start to finish, I could almost believe he's a sober and seasoned fantasy writer after reading it.
But then he comes back with shit like The Reckoners - which is one of the most embarassingly bad series I've ever read. It feels like it's written by a self published 15 year old anime fanfiction writer. It's adolescent drivel, all the characters are cringey as fuck, the dialogue and humor are the fucking worst. Edgy fucking 3 piece suit fedora wearing katana carrying holy fuck just kill me.
Most of his other novels are somewhere inbetween. Elantris was largely good until the last act, where it abruptly becomes retarded. Mistborn starts out good, and abruptly becomes generic anime fanfiction halfway through. Stormlight has been largely good, excluding the ending of book 2 which was fucking embarassing, but then he gets back on the horse and book 3 returns to the largely sober style of book 1.
I just don't get how someone abruptly becomes a terrible writer in the middle of his books. Is he intentionally dumbing down his books to try to appeal to a broader audience? Is he actually a terrible writer, but is sort of okay at mimicking better writers but occaisionally slips when he gets too excited? It's fucking baffling.

That really depends on what you want. The Farseer series is good if you want something more down to eart and you can handle Tragedies, the Crimson Queen is good if you want new wave Sword and Sorcery. If you want a fun, light Harry Potter type series then Into the Labyrinth is worth checking out.
There's also the Powder Mage series if you want something that is vastly different to your typical fantasy setting, it's also just very good generally. The Spellslinger series is decent light reading, it also departs pretty heavily from the typical fantasy structure (not to be confused with the SpellSINGer series, which is also pretty entertaining in its own right, but it's definitely the product of an LSD habit.)

Right, but then you're getting more into that grey area between cyberpunk and more classical science fiction. It's a genre built on aesthetics. Having some robotic enhancements eg. a robotic arm to replace the one lost in the Yakuza/Neo-Seoul war of 2036 or something, is pretty cyberpunk, but going full cyborg feels too futuristic. Post-cyberpunk? Would you consider Hannu Rajaniemi's stuff cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk, just like many other genres, has degrees of just how cyberpunk it is. On one end of the spectrum you have near-future pseudo-realism with minimal fantastic elements. On the other end, you have Raiden from MGR.
