Just got around to reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. It was an entertaining book, but what is the takeaway supposed to be from the fact that Mike appears to 'die' at the end of the book? Is it just supposed to be sad? Anyone have any good theories about what happened to him?

Best explanation I could come up with was a comment Mike had made during the attack on earth that he understood what an orgasm was like after his precision bombing. He said he stored it for later playback. I'd like to think that he was like a monkey who was taught to masturbate and did it so much he forgot to eat and starved to death, except here he was so busy getting off that he just stopped needing to talk to people.

thanks for the spoiler op, I only just started that
*throws book in trash*

the political bullshit was the reason for the book, when Mike wasn't needed anymore the author got rid of him.

the political bullshit wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It was only insufferable during the brief period where they were discussing their political philosophies.

more importantly, he killed mike off on the last two pages. it woudl have been just as easy to keep hiim alive and have the book have a happy ending. it just seems like an odd decision that I felt as if there was something I was missing

life doesn't have happy endings; sometimes people and things die, especially in revolutionary warfare

i think that's the sum of it

I just don't care if it's spoiled for you. It takes nothing away from the book to know that Mike dies.

P.S. Snape kills Dumbledore

I thought that was what Ludmilla's death was for. I guess he could have been hammering the point home again, although I didn't get that impression. I don't think I'll ever get a satisfying answer :(

See her how she flies
Golden sails across the sky
Close enough to touch
But careful if you try
Though she looks as warm as gold
The moon's a harsh mistress
The moon can be so cold

Once the sun did shine
Lord, it felt so fine
The moon a phantom rose
Through the mountains and the pines
And then the darkness fell
And the moon's a harsh mistress
It's so hard to love her well

I fell out of her eyes
I fell out of her heart
I fell down on my face
Yes, I did, and I -- I tripped and I missed my star
God, I fell and I fell alone, I fell alone
And the moon's a harsh mistress
And the sky is made of stone

The moon's a harsh mistress
She's hard to call your own.
