Good question OP, I sort of have a similar hang up. I think the writer is often just as important as the engineer or otherwise. Of course there wouldn't be writers without other important professions, but I think writers have historically played a great role at guiding people to find greater meaning/purpose. Just look at the effect Dostoevsky has had on so many. I'm not trying to say that great literature is some kind of miracle cure to nihilism, just that it can often help to direct one to a better world view. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't feel pressured into doing something that doesn't suit you and your talents. Writing is a great way that you can help to improve the world.

Tl;dr Writing is often just as important as other jobs, don't feel pressured to contribute to the world in ways that you aren't suited for.
