What is /lit/'s opinion on the ethics of pursuing a career as a writer over studying and getting a job that will play a role in combatting climate change? Is writing obsolete until this daunting threat to our species is stopped?

Good question OP, I sort of have a similar hang up. I think the writer is often just as important as the engineer or otherwise. Of course there wouldn't be writers without other important professions, but I think writers have historically played a great role at guiding people to find greater meaning/purpose. Just look at the effect Dostoevsky has had on so many. I'm not trying to say that great literature is some kind of miracle cure to nihilism, just that it can often help to direct one to a better world view. So I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't feel pressured into doing something that doesn't suit you and your talents. Writing is a great way that you can help to improve the world.

Tl;dr Writing is often just as important as other jobs, don't feel pressured to contribute to the world in ways that you aren't suited for.

Because "climate change" is trivially happening, the climate ALWAYS changes.
The question is "is climate change significantly influenced by human actions?", and if 97% of "scientist" believe that it would seem absolutely clear to me that something very wrong is going on.
Because no question that relies on models which are so enormously complex and hard to calculate as determining the future of not just weather, but climate, should have this consensus.

Without trying to prejudice this work, but also because of what I almost think I know to be the case, the results of this study will show that we can probably say a fair bit about < 100 year extra-tropical NH temperature variability (at least as far as we believe the proxy estimates), but honestly know fuck-all about what the > 100 year variability was like with any certainty (i.e., we know with certainty that we know fuck-all).

>plants will have more co2 to consume
Not this retardation again. More CO2 means Americanization of crops. They will grow more carbohydrates, yes, but in turn the concentration of nutrients will be lesser. Studies document this phenomenom in controlled enviroment and other studies show decrease in overall concentration of nutrients in floor over the course of 20th century. We don't need more carbohydrates, we already have shitton of calories. We need the nutrients. And this doesn't even mention what happens when the shit dissolves in Oceans.

Several studies have been conducted in recent decades on the effects of eCO2 on vegetable quality, including parameters related to taste, flavor, nutritive value, and industrial processing. These studies show that eCO2 can promote the accumulation of soluble sugar including glucose and fructose, and the accumulation of antioxidants including ascorbic acid, total phenols, and total flavonoids, but reduce the levels of protein, nitrate, Mg, Fe, and Zn in products. In practice, it is advisable to enhance vegetable quality by (1) selecting species or cultivars that respond well to eCO2; (2) providing optimal environments together with eCO2; (3) harvesting vegetables earlier than standards set at ambient CO2; and (4) combining with moderate environmental stresses. The promotion by the increased carbon fixation and thus the precursor, dilution effect, stress induction, and limitation by transpiration or N assimilation can generally explain the shifts of vegetable quality under eCO2. However, research is still required to reveal the underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms more specifically.

>Our study, based on an extensive database, shows that eCO2 has significant negative effects on
the concentration of several minerals and N (as a proxy for protein) in wheat grain, and that the effects
on N translates into reduced baking quality. Subgroup analysis of experimental systems reveals that
N concentration was more strongly affected in potted plants than plants grown in field soil. Also,
the significant difference found between FACE and OTC studies could be attributed to the different
concentration levels used and not the enclosure system itself. The pattern of effects by eCO2 on
different minerals was complex, showing that a single mechanism cannot account for the diversity
of responses.

you're talking about crops, you are not talking about the totality of plants worldwide which we have not a fucking clue about the effect on. I am nearly certain the retards that made those studies effectively ignored any evidence to the contrary because every single climate change scientist is forced to behave that way through peer pressure and funding incentives. Those studies probably ignore that American and other countries' farming practices deplete the nutritent potential of the soil and try to dishonestly conflate it with the changes that have happened in the climate, a laughably fucking retarded correlation.

>One of the consequential impacts of rising carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) and climate change is expected to be on food security (1). This expected impact is due, in part, to the vulnerability of the global population to food supply: Depending on definition, up to 1 billion people are deemed food insecure (2). For example, harvests of staple cereal crops, such as rice and maize, could decline by 20 to 40% as a function of increased surface temperatures in tropical and subtropical regions by 2100 without considering the impacts of extreme weather and climate events (3).

If you think that's science you are beyond saving. It conflates climate model predictions, anthroplogical understanding of populations, historical patterns of agriculture, speculation about how countries will respond to shortages(have you heard of importing?)

Do you think some kind of study with reproducible predictive ability has been conducted on this immensely complicated subejct?
