Most of the Frankfurt School authors are damn near unreadable. If you want to get a good overview of the group and their milieu, I'd suggest Grand Hotel Abyss: The Lives of the Frankfurt School.

Oddly enough, quite a lot of the Frankfurt School's critiques are well in line with those of the dissident anti-capitalist right. There is a deep strain of pessimism that runs through much of the FS that finds echos in the Right's narrative of decline.

It’s not as bad as it’s made out to be. Adorno was practically a conservative. The mix of Marx/Freud in a ‘critical’ approach to cultural issues would come to influence the 68 kids as they flooded the unis. So it’s definetely contributed to the leftist bias in higher education. But the ‘conspiracy’ aspect is overstated.

And some of this stuff is pretty good. Dialectic of Enlightenment is a critique of modernity as caustic as they come and Jargon of Authenticity is a good critique of Heidegger.

The former is more cynical, negative, and destructive in its aims, the latter more dialectical, even spiritual. The former won out. Its hard to generalize like this. The Frankfurt school is a bunch of guys. The Studies in Prejudice series includes tons of quantitative data, though their use of it is sometimes criticized, but this is more a matter of different epistemic assumptions resulting in different responses to data, rather than technical error.
