I can walk anywhere I want, downtown is 20 minutes by foot. I no longer bike due to bad cage interactions, but on bike you have a 10 mile range, and if you get a bus/rail you can extend that indefinitely. bike to the rail station, rail most of the way, then bike to the destination. less than 2 miles of overall cycling, you don't even break a sweat.

That's all true and well. And that, in part, precipitated the urban planning issues that we should be addressing. But today, that constructed necessity exists independently of any present advertising or, for most of us on this board, advertising that occurred during our lifetimes.

As a matter of fact, there is no economic rationale to such large-scale advertising in the face of an already existent car culture. If there were true collusion between firms on the image/culture front, they would collectively agree to not waste advertising dollars promoting their vehicles but rather redirect the money into lobbying and product investment. This is especially true now; in the cold war US landscape, there were only two major manufacturers vying for Americans' demand, and collusion was far easier. International competition has decimated their ability to do that. Modern advertising is, more than anything, the conduit through which differentiation is demonstrated to the masses. It will sometimes showcase aesthetic motifs, but more importantly it will emphasize how the product is differentiated in specifically discernible quantitative metrics like fuel economy or safety ratings or whatever other gay shit

Let me play devil's advocate. In the majority of major cities with well-developed public transit systems and walkability, the overall commute time is generally similar to American cities. In general people will tolerate commutes up to a certain length and affordability naturally pushes them towards that value. Live in a small city in the frozen north of the US, never got my license, never owned a car, been almost a year since I have been in any motorized form of transit. Never had problems getting around by foot and bike, been doing it for 20 years now. Don't even use mail order really, perhaps once or twice a year.
