The only book translated into English is called "The Green Light A Self-Critique of the Ecological Movement".

But his anti-car work is called L'hommauto (Automan/Carman).
It was written in 1967.
67. Think about it.

Here are two quotes :

L'auto n'a que faire de la liberté ; plus sa vitesse est grande, plus le choix se réduit. [...] Peut-être qu'un jour, en guise de chauffeur, la bagnole disposera d'une sorte de robot électronique informé en permanence par une machine cybernétique détenant toutes les données de la Circulation.

>The car has nothing to do with freedom; the higher the speed, the more reduced choice is. [...] Maybe one day, in place of a driver, cars will have a kind of electronic robot permanently informed by a cybernetic machine holding all the data about the Traffic.

I haven't owned a car in 4 years. 2 different top-20 cities. As a bonus, bringing groceries back on foot from over a mile away is a damned good workout. I can walk anywhere I want, downtown is 20 minutes by foot. I no longer bike due to bad cage interactions, but on bike you have a 10 mile range, and if you get a bus/rail you can extend that indefinitely. bike to the rail station, rail most of the way, then bike to the destination. less than 2 miles of overall cycling, you don't even break a sweat.

I have saved tens of thousands of dollars not owning a cage. I even sold the bike for $100 more than I bought it for.

The anti-car gang is the type that never conducts metaphysical critiques of their own positions, I understand that this requires a complex thought which most perspectives never end up considering.
More materially, the anti-car gang type has never driven an amazing car, they probably all drive/drove automatic cuckmobiles out of societal necessity before coming to their conclusions. No matter how anti-car one is from an environmentalist/anti-technological perspective, to deny the wonder of driving a Honda CRX, alone or with a companion, at 4-5am (especially), is to be a total and complete retard lacking entirely in transcendental appreciativeness functions.

Nobody has sold me on the image of a CRX driving at 4am on harsh mountain roads, you fucking retard, have you even seen a car advert? They're focused entirely on fucking disgusting modern abominations with automatic gears, ABS, TC (LOL), rear view cameras etc etc, all designed for "comfort" and "economy" and "sustainability" and so on, designed specifically to cater to the urbanite. If you had ever been on a late night drive, through nice roads, in a nice car, you wouldn't be spewing the cuck shit you are. >our desire for a car magnified into an America where 400 million people desire a car turns the country into a smog-filled interstate-focused wasteland.

That's not how that works. People don't buy a car to enjoy it, otherwise everyone would be buying track cars and going out for night drives. The average normie just needs it to get from A to B because of the way cities are set up in North America.

You're still just attacking a symptom of the poor urban planning in this country. That same urban planning that also creates housing shortages and forces gentrification on poor neighborhoods. How about you direct your energy there instead of trying to shoehorn rabid anti-consumerism into an issue that has far more insidious and dangerous roots?

Automobile ads do not exist to create demand for cars. They exist to differentiate cars to the lay consumer. The demand for cars is generated organically because of their necessity in modern America. Ads are just different manufacturers trying to capture that demand. You'd have to be a fool to think that ads exist in order to indoctrinate Americans into car culture. It's just like Marx says. The base is more powerful than the superstructure.

Have you been cryogenically frozen since the first world war? Large-scale advertising has been about libidinal desire since Edward Bernays, if not earlier.
>The demand for cars is generated organically because of their necessity in modern America.
The demand came from the necessity, but the necessity was not generated organically. Car manufacturers and oil trusts were some of the most powerful lobbying groups in the 20th century, and they spent a hell of a lot of money forcing this necessity. Why do you think European transportation is so much more reliant on high-speed rail than the US?

And who's to blame? The car lobby! 120 years ago the USA had a "public" transportation system superior to anything in the world. In order to increase demand the car manufacturers bought all the trams, bus lines and railways and let them rot away or rightout close them so people would have to buy more cars.

Why do you think European transportation is so much more reliant on high-speed rail than the US?

That's all true and well. And that, in part, precipitated the urban planning issues that we should be addressing. But today, that constructed necessity exists independently of any present advertising or, for most of us on this board, advertising that occurred during our lifetimes.

As a matter of fact, there is no economic rationale to such large-scale advertising in the face of an already existent car culture. If there were true collusion between firms on the image/culture front, they would collectively agree to not waste advertising dollars promoting their vehicles but rather redirect the money into lobbying and product investment. This is especially true now; in the cold war US landscape, there were only two major manufacturers vying for Americans' demand, and collusion was far easier. International competition has decimated their ability to do that. Modern advertising is, more than anything, the conduit through which differentiation is demonstrated to the masses. It will sometimes showcase aesthetic motifs, but more importantly it will emphasize how the product is differentiated in specifically discernible quantitative metrics like fuel economy or safety ratings or whatever other gay shit

All of this that I'm saying is just to demonstrate that no, the pleasure that several 20-something year olds feel on an anonymous Bhutanese Scuba Diving forum when driving is not the product of a constructed advertising-fueled culture (that they probably weren't even privy to, given how detached they are from traditional media). It probably won't be that way for future generations either. Driving is intrinsically pleasurable to many people in the same way bicycling or gliding are, and there's no need for you to assault that. Go join your local YIMBY chapter if you really care about fighting sprawl and ending car culture. It has far darker origins than just automobile manufacturers - the history of the American suburbs is primarily one of racism. And let me have my smoking night drives in peace

I really, genuinely wish this was true, but the libertarian idea of a perfectly wise and efficient capitalist machine is not reality.
Advertising is not informational, it is aspirational. This has been true for nearly a century. Car brands need to cultivate an image of what their brand means - Lexus pushes its luxury, Subaru pushes its engineering, Ford pushes its ability to give you a functioning dick, etc - and shove that image as far into your head as it can, to the point that the main goals of 21st century advertising now include getting consumers so invested in the brand that they accidentally advertise it themselves.
You also, more specifically to cars, don't need active collusion to get to the same place when you're advertising similar products. Chevy didn't need to sit in a room with Ford on a teleconference with the guys at Nissan to realize that pushing the narrative of cars as an achievement of independence and a symbol of male verility sells them well.

>> No.13475928

>>13475754
Basically, no, the individual enjoying night drives is not bad, but if that individual is unaware of the way he was manipulated into buying that car and ignores the entire enormous culture of consumerism tied into it, that individual needs to be more aware of his surroundings.
There are other factors of American suburban hellscapes, racism being among them, but nobody made shitloads of money selling racism to the public. Cars contributed just as much, if not more, to these systemic problems, and the fact is that the majority of Americans were so successfully manilulated that most don't recognize that the systemic problems are there in the first place, let alone that cars played such a major role.

It's both, and the aspirational component is still part of the differentiation. Different brands push different narratives, and given that two-car households are the norm and women form much of the modern consumerbase for cars, it isn't simply about a singular narrative of coolness or masculinity but differential narratives that emphasize the utility of the vehicles for a given type of consumer. It's a changed landscape, and an informal one-dimensional collusion is not really possible anymore. Firms can't push a singular notion of car-as-fulfillment in the way automobile advertisements used to be able to do for their overwhelmingly male consumers with limited purchasing options.

>>13475928

Yeah, I can get behind this. Ultimately, I leave you with this map. The number of cars on the road in Europe and America is similar on a per capita basis. Many Europeans are passionate about cars too, so it's probably possible to have a society where cars are respected and people can be enthusiastic about them but where they are not a universal requirement for urban or suburban life. I don't think the typical /o/ car-head will complain about highways getting torn down to build higher density neighborhood and transit lines.

>> No.13476072

>>13476024

Also I should add - it becomes a bit of a problem to just hate cars when you end up siding with NIMBYs who fight car culture and highway expansions but who then will also fight development and housing expansion because they don't want their property values to go down. This necessitates a vehicle for much of the population. We shouldn't have suburbs.
- The solution is to build giant commie blocks near work places, so that people can walk to work.

Face it, suburbs are MAJOR cope. It's adults 'playing house'. They think their suburban cuck plot surrounded on all 4 sides by neighbors they hate is real "land", and they feel they are self-sufficient.

Let me play devil's advocate. In the majority of major cities with well-developed public transit systems and walkability, the overall commute time is generally similar to American cities. In general people will tolerate commutes up to a certain length and affordability naturally pushes them towards that value. In Tokyo, nobody drives EVER, but people still commute for upwards of 40 minutes a day on average.

It is more environmentally friendly though, for sure. Though whether it strictly dominates suburban life is up for debate. It might not be as clean as a suburban setting, and the lack of nearby facilities for recreation might be inconvenient

If commute times aren't significantly different, then the option with more safety and sustainability, lower costs, and a happier, more vibrant populace is the better option.

Tokyo has 23 million and isn't a shithole. No crime, kids walk to school alone and don't get run over, trains run on time. There's not too many people in murrka, there's too many retards to enter civilization.

However, you're correct about the "muh land" suburbfucks with 1/20 an acre and 90% of that is taken up by the house and driveway. "m-muh land." lmao. what are you gonna grow there to feed your family of 4 500 lb land-whales? about 3 tomato plants and a few zucchini? yeah bro.

In most parts of Southern Europe it would be enough to renovate old town houses and palaces in the historic centres of towns and cities
But apparently lower middle class kikes want some dull and poor quality semi-detached houses or mc mansions parodies (if they can afford them)
Only immigrants in public housing and old money families now still live in urban brick and stone houses
Fucking kikes

Live in a small city in the frozen north of the US, never got my license, never owned a car, been almost a year since I have been in any motorized form of transit. Never had problems getting around by foot and bike, been doing it for 20 years now. Don't even use mail order really, perhaps once or twice a year.

I don't hate cars though, just prefer to move under my own power and would rather look back on a life of traveling thousands of miles under my own power then hours of sitting in traffic, I do over 5,000 miles a year on my bike, almost got 10,000 one year, would have but that winter sucked for biking so I was a pedestrian for a couple months.

>always a new street or neighborhood to explore
>dazzling skyscrapers everywhere
>thousands of bars and restaurants
>usually something natural and cool (Seattle is on the sound, NYC has waterfront, Philly has riverfront, Miami is on a beach, SF has the bay and ocean)
>huge amazing parks nearby, places in the city that feel like wilderness
>amazing flower gardens
>farmers markets and festivals and amazing christmas displays
>all in walking distance
