There is so much wrong with this thread. For once, everyone cries out about how no WOC and minorities get a piece of the cake but all of them only care about anglo or hispanic literature even if they want diversity. Did none of them read continental literature or was it just not noteable for them? Seems kinda ignorant.

Speaking on the internet is virtually unchecked. There's really no social control making you think twice about what you say or whether you sound intelligent. Social media is billed to the masses as a place to voice your opinion, and a place where your opinion is important and matters. I don't know, because there is a large degree of social control and incentivization going on. The people in the thread in the OP are basically the stereotype of reddit gold miners. All trying, desperately, to pen some bon mot to make them seem wise and clever and interesting. People on here say stupid or terrible things all the time (myself included) but at least they aren't doing it to increase some digital social capital or to craft some online persona. I love how they all argue about what the youth should read. It is the same argument since the beginning of time. They will become the same shithead teachers that force their favorite novels onto the children. Lrn2 appreciation. It's what you're able to see in a book, what you derive from it, the life that flows from it towards you, that should be your focus. Appreciation starts there, in that transmission of blood. And sometimes it proceeds without any "explicit intellectualization. All criticism and analysis is mostly a mean for this end.

So ask yourself: what are the book you actually admired? The book that made you feel exhilarated just from reading them? The book that regularly made you want to stop and think for a minute or ten about what you've just read? The book that you felt almost compelled to reread as soon as you had finished them? The book that kept you awake for hours on end?
Those are the kind of books you'll be able to enjoy wholeheartedly. It's not a big deal if some parts of them are boring. It's not a problem that you want to be or seem cultured. The problem would be reading only for appearance and never enjoying any book. That would be a small but very distinct form of misery.

Also look for intelligence and insight wherever you can find it. Sometimes you're reading a dumb book and suddenly the author hit you with an actual good bit of observation. Reading is an opportunistic endeavour, you should really plunder books for everything they can get you.
