There isn't much pre-classical that can be properly appreciated by the Western ear.

Music communicates on an emotional, fundamental level - which means it is inherently anti-intellectual

Why do you deny instinct?

>>13421326
Well first, you obviously have a limited knowledge of music if you think all music is solely based on emotion. It’s a bad habit to make statements about things you have little knowledge in. Second, denying fundamental parts of the human experience in hopes of appearing “intellectual” is for edgy teenagers. Neither of you are geniuses and fun fact: most geniuses enjoyed and were even inspired by music.

I did this 3 years ago, dived head on into classical music, starting from baroque, through classical, romantic, modernist, up to late 20th century music, with occasional detour for renaissance and contemporary classical. It's a long trip and thousands of hours of listening and reading (if one wants to understand the progression better).

>Was it worth it?
Yes, but with the caveat that it takes tons of time if taken as a whole: different periods, genres, instruments, composers, styles. I developed hearing to a degree that I didn't have before, to the level where most things non-classical sound boring and annoyingly flat. I also found countless cultural trivia in works and lives of composers. Some of the works I can't imagine living without — the madrigals of Gesualdo; the tradition of chamber works from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and others up to Ravel, Debussy and Janacek, and then Shostakovich; thethe pianistic virtuosity of Liszt, French impressionists, Scriabin and others; the sheer force of impact of the Matthäus-Passion or Sibelius's violin concerto; operas of Mozart, bel canto composers, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, up to verismo in Italy is a world of its own. But it's a bottomless pit.
>What do I get out of it?
If taken seriously, it's a beautiful and difficult hobby. If you get to the point where you notice patters, can analyze the form, follow the development of a piece or understand languages in oratorios amd operas (they are great aid when learning German, Italian or French) then you will never want to go back.
You may even pick up an instrument, start going to a concert hall, or just feel superior to 99% of people for having an elite, if mostly socially useless interest.
