Convince me that The Old Man And The Sea was actually a good book. Or put differently, tell me how it is good/what makes it good and legitimizes it as a must-read classic
I think it was wasted time going through that

I didn't really care for it myself, but I could still appreciate it was a very well written and well crafted story.
Hemingway achieves exactly what he sets out to do, the structure and balance are all just right, the prose is exactly suited to the themes, he controls the tone and atmosphere perfectly throughout.
I always find Hemingway a little tedious, too much American manliness for me to relate to, but he's obviously a fine writer on a technical level.
