Who are some of your favorite poets/poetry? I've recently become more interested in poetry and I'd like to know more poets. Pic unrelated

Emily Dickinson is the perennial poet. Shakespeare also wrote very good poetry. Elizabeth Browning is in the same vein.

Sylvia Plath is very good upon deeper readings. D. H. Lawrence is a Christian naturalist who is pretty deep. Ezra Pound experimented with unconventional meter well, and is a poet of passion.

Yamabe No Akahito is a Zen Japanese poet who caught my eye:

To my good friend
Would I show, I thought,
The plum blossoms,
Now lost to sight
Amid the falling snow.

Pablo Neruda is a Columbian poet of rare quality.

There are many living poets.

The following two are Christian but appeal to me nevertheless.
Jericho Brown. He uses Christian themes, but explores them with an unabashed spiritual eye.
Mary Szybist. She writes playful and refreshing poetry.

Maggie Nelson is worth a read. She is raw, but well-mannered and aloof.

In my limited exposure to the academic world, I got the impression that publishing for poetry is highly political nowadays. Almost entirely an insider-outsider thing. So don’t accept what wins awards as the best of today. Keep digging.

David Jones is great, in a similar vein to Pound. A Christian, but it's stupid to point that out as if it's a drawback anyways.
