just finished echopraxia today. wish i hadn't put it off so long after finishing blindsight, i would have caught on to stuff much quicker if i hadn't. but i read somewhere it's a "sidequel" to blindsight so figured it wouldn't be worth reading as i usually dislike reading books "set in the same universe but not a sequel"

but the plots of the two are fairly tightly interwoven. 7/10 would recommend.

The Selected Fantasy chart is already better than this.
If you still want to make another chart separate SF and Fantasy works, don't throw in a few token dystopian SF books into a chart mostly filled with Fantasy books. And try not to repeat authors, even if it's Wolfe.

Also, Edgar Allan Poe? Really?

If you really want to improve the charts, work on the chart that has sub genre specific recs. It's by far the worst chart.

>> No.13376231

>The Selected Fantasy chart is already better than this.
That chart has The Buried Giant and a Feist book, how is it better? Also, the chart is way to small to serve as the representative rec chart, especially given that some of those 16 books seem to never be talked about on sffg.
>If you still want to make another chart separate SF and Fantasy works, don't throw in a few token dystopian SF books into a chart mostly filled with Fantasy books
Fair point, but the chart is a prototype, and hence it being homogeneous is normal. It will be fixed as I add more books.
>Also, Edgar Allan Poe? Really?
I honestly don't see your point. He is a great author of speculative fiction, who influenced (directly or indirectly) almost everyone on the charts, mine or otherwise.

Anyways, I don't claim my chart is amazing, but the existing charts have some fundamental problems and so I believe we should work on fixing them.

I can't decide if I actually enjoyed this book. I can't deny that it was well written and interesting, but it took a lot of effort took to read, and ultimately it was just a neat sci-fi story. It seems like all the prose and obfuscation was spent on something of little substance that didn't warrant it and thus wasn't really worth the difficulty. Literally what I think when I read litRPG. I've had bad luck finding decent series'. I dropped Stork Tower because it didn't actually involve climbing a Tower and it dropped RPG elements at me out of nowhere once the VR kicked in although the book summary didn't make it out to sound VR at all, just a regular sci-fi story. Nova Terra was bland and the 'big twist' at the end MC's party betrays him as a sacrifice that he survives was foreshadowed well enough but ultimately not that shocking of a reveal. The writing for MC is fine enough but I wasn't interested to continue with the sequel.

What is the purpose of this chart? Is it to serve as an introduction to the genre? We already have the crash course chart and it's pretty good, but SF-only. Is it just "these are good"? in the case of this story, the recipes can't be based on the sorts of things i normally cook because the whole premise revolves around the MC only avoiding starving through science rather than hunting/farming skills

as a result the ingredients he has to work with are things that you need to apply science to in order to render them edible

you saw how I mentioned glycerin there? the world doesnt have sugar, or honey, fruit, or any other kind of sweetener but it does have oil, wood and water, and salt. that glycerin is something he makes for himself by burning the wood to ash and boiling it with the other three to split the oil into soap and glycerin

Nowadays, that sort of thing IS the orthodoxy, and Star Trek announcing it'll have a nonbinary character is just smug risk-free service to the dominant/popular morality, treated as if it were the risky iconoclasm it was 50 years ago. It's the difference between Jesus earning converts out in the desert, and the smug church lady judging duh queers 2000 years later.

Honestly, it'd be a bold move to have an all-Asian Star Trek crew in the 21st century. Literally every fucking show is multicultural now.

I don't even watch star trek and I know that's bullshit. The entire in-series reason for the multi-ethnic crew is that as ambassadors of starfleet, the crew are meant to serve as representatives of the whole of humanity. We are literally catching up to the idea star trek envisioned for us.

So anon, what's the REAL problem? At some point in your life did you become the villain in your own story, or did you never care about the message from the start and only accepted it because it was contrarian and controversial? Either way, say what you really fucking mean or shut the fuck up and fuck off

Then maybe you don't know as much about it as you'd like to think. Having a multiethnic cast, working as equals, in 1966, was a massive deal. Dare to compare to the other major prime-time shows in 1966 and you will see just acres of whiteness with the occasional token. They got serious, serious blowback for having an interracial kiss. It was risky shit.

Nowadays, every single show on TV has a multiethnic cast.

>The entire in-series reason for the multi-ethnic crew is that as ambassadors of starfleet, the crew are meant to serve as representatives of the whole of humanity.

That has literally never been said in-series, especially not in the original series. You have no idea what you're talking about.

As far as I can tell it's standalone, but there's a dozen books set in the same universe. This one at least has lots of witty dialogue in a sort of odd-couple cop story set in the far future about investigating a snake-oil salesman's land cruise to a purported cure for a deadly disease, that turns out to get them sucked into an alien collective unconscious. It's bizarre but just great.
