Most of the people I know that studied philosophy academically are kind of retarded since they spend too much time on any one philosopher or topic. They get a general overview of the entirety of philosophy which makes them think they know what they're about and they unknowingly pick up their teachers biases along the way. They might even be worse than the average person since they're so confident in their stupidity.

Have a look at a philosophy professor in action:

Spend some years studying philosophy, then go on to law school.

First is respactable and serves you in many ways if you're able to wrap your head around it.

Law may not be as personal, but can just be a perfect match for many philosophy students, I think. Anyone have experience with this?

Yep I feel the same way. Problem I have is usually with students who go on to become pop-philosophers.

We have quite a few of those in my country. Pop-phiosophers are type like Alain de Botton, who have a utilitarian view on most subjects and cant help but reduce even guys ike fucking Heidegger down to lame self-help gurus.

I thought I heard the original point, the mission of philosophy was to discover how the world works and how best to live it. Science took the baton of the first question.
A little overview of philosophy is all most people ever really need

I myself also plan on philosophy degree, although I want to get an M.Arch. I know, two extremely useless degrees with no job prospects. But I really like architecture. The m.Arch is usually longer, like 3-4 years. It doesn't require any prerequisites since it's artsy instead of technical. It's not to say I couldn't do an m.eng, it's just that I'd have to take calc 2, physics, chemistry, etc., whatever goes into the basic engineering requirements. I strongly suggest you to have a look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics for both Civil Engineering and Architecture. There is still art in Civil Engineering, but if you are going to follow your heart, then I suppose go for the Architecture degree.
