I always hear the argument that “80 years of relative peace in the west has created generations which are too soft”. Even if this may be true, I’m not sure the extreme death and suffering which comes from war is a worthwhile trade-of. What do /lit/ think? Is war a net positive or negative on society?

Modern war isn't good.
War with physical, human struggle is good.

War can happen while the generations at home still remain soft. It happens today with the fringes of our "American empire". Happened with the Romans too. Just depends how severe the war is.

Without war pic related wouldn't have been written. Suffering is ALWAYS good as a means to grandeur.

very true. when it turns into mindless terror-soaked slaughter (like ww2 with all the extraeffective and mass range weapons) it's not worth it at all. especially these days.
only swords, spears and bows should be permitted in war.

War in the sense of scared diseased lads sitting in trenches with shit around their ankles shelling each other and dying of dysentery and mustard gas is not useful or conducive to virtue. In the sense of brave acheans setting out to sacred illium to rouse grisly war and win glory or give it to their enemies or noble knights seeking their shining metaphysical errantry in gods struggle certainly does lead to virtue. The closest thing you can get today is a passionate commitment to competitive martial arts (boxing etc).

War is only good if it serves a noble purpose, such as a means to end violence or for optimization of the world.

>> No.13341914

Not really, it's been justified plenty of times though. Something I think is ultimately inevitable and the further depersonalization that modern war causes defintely aint good

>My community college teacher said it was a fallacy, so it must be.

They also say the slippery slope is a fallacy - yet that is exactly how anything gets done politically: a little at the time. "Logical Fallacies" are tools to hamstring you in a debate

>> No.13342003

>>13341959
that's because the slippery slope fallacy is a strawman. If you don't adhere to logic you aren't having a debate, other than that I agree it hamstrings you, the left has literally published a book on how to fight dirty in a debate.

I agree with you, totally. Logic is extremely important, but many "fallacies" are not really fallacies, and get thrown around because someone just wants to shut you down. I wish the Anon would expand on his Broken Window Fallacy accusation to the other Anon, and actually engage him in debate. But he won't

War helps an economy that is stagnant and has a large military industrial complex. If war helps your economy it is not a good economy. War only destroys and creates the means for destruction.

It might be good for somethings but not a good economy, we should strive for a growing economy and not one looking to profit on regress.

War is pretty good for the economy and technology in general. I secretly want a no nuke WW3 so I can have technology that we wouldn't have in the next 100+ years in under 20

That said short term is baddie bad and could potentially get out of hands. But think of the sweet tech tho
