War in the sense of scared diseased lads sitting in trenches with shit around their ankles shelling each other and dying of dysentery and mustard gas is not useful or conducive to virtue. In the sense of brave acheans setting out to sacred illium to rouse grisly war and win glory or give it to their enemies or noble knights seeking their shining metaphysical errantry in gods struggle certainly does lead to virtue. The closest thing you can get today is a passionate commitment to competitive martial arts (boxing etc).

War is only good if it serves a noble purpose, such as a means to end violence or for optimization of the world.

Not really, it's been justified plenty of times though. Something I think is ultimately inevitable and the further depersonalization that modern war causes defintely aint good
