I've got a soft spot for Patricia C. Wrede's magic forest, with its magic pull-cords the royal could use and... some sort of mischievous... I guess I don't remember much.

Though there were forests with magic in them in her Frontier Magic series, which was in a magical America where there weren't any Indians but there were lizards that turned you to stone in the woods.

Non-talking trees like Old Man Willow can be even creepier. Magical forests need mystery, and talking can obfuscate that.
>Which book has the best magical forest?
I really liked the Labyrinth in the Death Gate Cycle, though it felt like it was better the less it was described.

Death's End, I'm waiting for it to kick in. Dark Forest took a while to start but it was worth it.

How do I improve on the cyberpunk "formula?" I'm so cumbrained that I can barely attempt to break such a monotonous genre (corporations, hacking, cybernetics, crime), but I love the aesthetic and the possibilities for a good story.
The only ideas I've managed to form in my head is a short story about
>a UN clean up crew having to deal with a bio-weapon being used in the Amazon and the locals trying to keep their privacy from the rest of the world. Going to deal with the future in the countryside instead of inside cities.
>a high school student plans to cheat on a test. Deals with growing up in the future.

the Hobbit is literally for kids though, so it's akin to reading the first Harry Potter but with slightly more sophisticated language. Very short and worth reading though.

LOTR is much more adult. I read it last year for the first time since I was a teenager, and was surprised that I enjoyed it far more than when I was younger and couldn't appreciate all of Tolkien's ideas, particularly his religious themes.

I'd also recommend The Silmarillion afterwards, which is sort of like a fake history book, and The Children of Hurin, which is quite a lot darker than LOTR and less known, but amazing.

I seem to recall, probably from the Silmarillion, that Gandalf was always the slightly greater wizard, but he preferred to wander Middle-Earth and enjoy the company of 'lesser' beings. Whereas Saruman was always an aloof dick who took over Orthanc and brooded over shit, but men were pretty pleased cause at least it kept the Dunlendings out of the damn tower. Basically, it was known that he was prone to being corrupted due to pride, and therefore things happened the way they did rather than the ring coming to Saruman.

Pulp is good. Pulp is life. Remember that next time. And the book I was going to recommend is Dungeon Samurai. It's an isekai so if that triggers you then don't bother reading fruther, but the writer also describes it as an "anti-litrpg." Now I've never read ANY litrpg before and I don't plan to, but my take is the book is an litrpg, but done in a much, MUCH more realistic manner. The book goes into balls-deep details about what it would actually be like to traverse a monster-filled dungeon with traps and monster bosses.

birdboi, I'm going to level with you about something

In the span of a few weeks, you've written more than most authors will write in their entire lives, and what's more you did so while writing about something you're genuinely passionate about. That's rare man. That alone is amazing. The fact that on top of all of that you have a world you've fleshed out down to mapping the fucking weather patterns shows more than just time investment and attention to detail: it shows that what your writing is completely and utterly true to yourself.

Don't let some guy who hates maps take that away from you. Even if he's right that people don't like maps it doesn't matter. I for one hate learning other languages, but it still awes me that Tolkien invented his own languages complete with beautiful-looking alphabets and nuanced etymology. People don't have to like your maps to respect them, and respect is far more valuable.

Finished this yesterday, pretty enjoyable. In terms of setting it's somewhat similar to the Sabriel books by Garth Nix, the main character is a warrior-priest, with significantly more emphasis on the Priest side than usual, who by happenstance ends up at ground zero of a primordial dragon waking up, which brings with it all sorts of supernatural shit that had been sealed away for centuries. Dragon is mostly a name, it's a six legged walking mountain (the five other include a stormcloud, a windly, human shaped blob, and a window into somewhere else).
Most of the plot is kind of a Jack the Ripper story, the main character has to track down this thing called Janus, which doesn't particularly like humans, and has been murdering priests by turning them into gory works of art. It also has a magical dick joke which cracked me up.

Tended a bit more toward action in the latter half of the book, which I didn't really think was its strong suit, but it was adequate.

I also finished it recently, was surprised at how short it was. I also really liked it, something I didn't expect was how the best stalkers were all locals, they weren't scummy treasure hunters at first, just guys whose town had got blasted by forces beyond their comprehension and now had to risk their lives just to step in the neighborhoods they grew up in. Also surprised it predated Chernobyl by so much.

But god when shit begins to happen you literally cant stop reading, EYE of the world is tame, when shit hits the fan you literally cant stop reading and cant help but curse jordan for having to read through hundreds of lines of women sighing, women being bitches, dresses and foods being described to excruciating details.

Does early Card get shilled in these threads? Hart's Hope was really different, sort of Le Guin by way of the Old Testament with enough standard fantasy in there to throw you off. Treason is good enough you forget you're reading a video game. Worthing Saga feels like half of a better story but there's all of Card's lyricism in it. And of course his short stories are bizarre.

Or speaking of sentimental Americans, has anyone read Clifford D. Simak? Sort of like Ray Bradbury with a skeleton. The City stories are about humanity spreading out to country houses since the helicopter makes travel so easy, then screwing off to Jupiter because we find out the creatures there have more fun with their lives, leaving behind the super-intelligent dogs we uplifted to deal with the super-intelligent ants.

I just realized YWHE is running a racket. He created demons to devour human souls and the only way to avoid this, is by praying to him. Like: why create the demons in the first place?

And I came to this conclusion that YWHE and Muhammad and the Pope and Jesus and Satan are all filthy kikes forcing you to play a rigged game. If you praise Satan, you're praising a kike. If you praise Jesus, you're praising a kike. If you praise Muhammad, you're praising a kike-fucker, and your children are considered kikes if the mother is a kike, so all of Islam are kikes.

If you praise Thor, the entire mythology got kike-ifies into oblivion by a kike priest, so Thor is now a kike. Similar to Zeus and Pan.

In fact, Pan is also a kike by association with Satan.

Why are we praising kikes if they ultimately want to destroy us? I'm high btw.

But before the tower crashed to charred and smouldering shards upon the sand, one last imperial warrior leaped across the ravaged breaching platform and onto the wall of the fortress. The man was a giant, standing nearly seven feet tall. He was clad in blackened scale-mail armour and a full-faced, spiked iron helm, and he wielded a great curved tulwar with a notched and glyph-scored blade. Three Vyrgothian warriors fell instantly before that vast sword, their armour rent and sundered.
Caylen watched enthralled as Haakon suddenly spied the towering swordsman and strode resolutely to meet him, his mighty blood-kissed axe dripping red. Like two titans born of legend the men met, rutilant sparks erupting from the resounding clash of their steel. Locked in a gruelling battle of untrammelled might, neither warrior yielded an inch, their colossal weapons grinding and shrieking in a cacophony of pattern-welded death.

How in the fuck does a metal musician who only writes part time have better prose than the vast majority of modern fantasy writers?

No, it isn't. In fact it is pretty hard to think of a fantasy book which is even slightly popular and worse than Malazan. Malazan combines immense long-windedness and PoV bloat of WoT or late ASoIaF books with Abercrombie-tier implausibility of characters and world building on Terry Goodkind's level of stupid.
