the Hobbit is literally for kids though, so it's akin to reading the first Harry Potter but with slightly more sophisticated language. Very short and worth reading though.

LOTR is much more adult. I read it last year for the first time since I was a teenager, and was surprised that I enjoyed it far more than when I was younger and couldn't appreciate all of Tolkien's ideas, particularly his religious themes.

I'd also recommend The Silmarillion afterwards, which is sort of like a fake history book, and The Children of Hurin, which is quite a lot darker than LOTR and less known, but amazing.

Pulp is good. Pulp is life. Remember that next time. And the book I was going to recommend is Dungeon Samurai. It's an isekai so if that triggers you then don't bother reading fruther, but the writer also describes it as an "anti-litrpg." Now I've never read ANY litrpg before and I don't plan to, but my take is the book is an litrpg, but done in a much, MUCH more realistic manner. The book goes into balls-deep details about what it would actually be like to traverse a monster-filled dungeon with traps and monster bosses.

In the span of a few weeks, you've written more than most authors will write in their entire lives, and what's more you did so while writing about something you're genuinely passionate about. That's rare man. That alone is amazing. The fact that on top of all of that you have a world you've fleshed out down to mapping the fucking weather patterns shows more than just time investment and attention to detail: it shows that what your writing is completely and utterly true to yourself.

Don't let some guy who hates maps take that away from you. Even if he's right that people don't like maps it doesn't matter. Finished this yesterday, pretty enjoyable. In terms of setting it's somewhat similar to the Sabriel books by Garth Nix, the main character is a warrior-priest, with significantly more emphasis on the Priest side than usual, who by happenstance ends up at ground zero of a primordial dragon waking up, which brings with it all sorts of supernatural shit that had been sealed away for centuries. Dragon is mostly a name, it's a six legged walking mountain (the five other include a stormcloud, a windly, human shaped blob, and a window into somewhere else).
Most of the plot is kind of a Jack the Ripper story, the main character has to track down this thing called Janus, which doesn't particularly like humans, and has been murdering priests by turning them into gory works of art. It also has a magical dick joke which cracked me up.

Tended a bit more toward action in the latter half of the book, which I didn't really think was its strong suit, but it was adequate.

Does early Card get shilled in these threads? Hart's Hope was really different, sort of Le Guin by way of the Old Testament with enough standard fantasy in there to throw you off. Treason is good enough you forget you're reading a video game. Worthing Saga feels like half of a better story but there's all of Card's lyricism in it. And of course his short stories are bizarre.

Or speaking of sentimental Americans, has anyone read Clifford D. Simak? Sort of like Ray Bradbury with a skeleton. The City stories are about humanity spreading out to country houses since the helicopter makes travel so easy, then screwing off to Jupiter because we find out the creatures there have more fun with their lives, leaving behind the super-intelligent dogs we uplifted to deal with the super-intelligent ants.
