Stoicism is nihilism.

>> No.13285384

It's not a serious philosophy. More self help-ish. I enjoy some of their books, but Neoplatonism and Middle Platonism are way better.

it's a philosophy that is genuinely applicable and used by tons of men living in stress like soldiers, and laid the basis for Cognitive Behavior Therapy.
Platonism is used by pretentious pseuds in academia, primarily.

Yeah, that's why it's not a serious philosophy. It's a self help method meant for application for psychological stress.

>Remember that you are an actor in a drama, of such a kind as the author pleases to make it. If short, of a short one; if long, of a long one. If it is his pleasure you should act a poor man, a cripple, a governor, or a private person, see that you act it naturally. For this is your business, to act well the character assigned you; to choose it is another’s.

Nah. It's useless to worry or to be angry about things you can't control. For example, where you were born, how well off your family is, what your race is, etc. You have no control over this, so stop worrying about these things and focus on that which you have control over.

"When a man enters the foot-race," says Chrysippus with his usual aptness, "it is his duty to put forth all his strength and strive with all his might to win; but he ought never with his foot to trip, or with his hand to foul a competitor. Thus in the stadium of life, it is not unfair for anyone to seek to obtain what is needful for his own advantage, but he has no right to wrest it from his neighbour."

Amor fati is not resigning to your fate in the way anon above implied. He meant that stoics passively accept whatever happens to them without trying to better their situation, which is wrong.

Stoicism was literally started by a guy who couldn't handle being a Cynic after some soup or spilled onto his leg lmao
>From the day Zeno became Crates’ pupil, he showed a strong bent for philosophy, though with too much native modesty to assimilate Cynic shamelessness. Hence Crates, desirous of curing this defect in him, gave him a potful of lentil-soup to carry through the Ceramicus; and when he saw that Zeno was ashamed and tried to keep it out of sight, Crates broke the pot with a blow of his staff. As Zeno began to run off in embarrassment with the lentil-soup flowing down his legs, Crates chided, "Why run away, my little Phoenician? Nothing terrible has befallen you."[9]

>philosophy that isn't applicable to life is mental masturbation and not philosophy
If you need a philosophy in order to do something as basic as deal with life then you just don’t have your shit together and/or suffer from psychological issues. Real philosophy is for people who already have their life in order and have healthy minds. Thus they can afford the luxury of contemplating eternal truths. That’s why stoicism isn’t a real philosophy, it’s just a system for “coping”. Once you get your shit together, only then can you seriously consider engaging with philosophy.

And your own death. Nothing in life is more serious in Stoicism than the fact you yourself will die, and should be prepared for it at any time, and live in a way that is deeply aware of that fact.
