Why are there so many fucking taverns in fantasy books
They're full of loud drunk working class types, why would nerds like them
Just have your characters meet at a town square or something

>> No.13265710

>>13265696
Because a Tavern is an extremely easy way to establish the general character of a town.
It shows how respectable or dissolute the average citizen is, you will usually have a small aside describing merchants haggling over something which tells you what the town trades in, which by extension can tell you how the surrounding landscape is. For example merchants haggling over sheep would indicate that the surroundings are pasture land, whereas merchants haggling over furs would indicate woods. It can be used to establish whether locals are friendly or unfriendly, and it can also offer an easy justification for the primary characters to interact with people from a different social class.

It's because it's a good (if unoriginal) way of introducing new characters, and it's in a setting that doesn't require anything other than your full attention to the characters presented.
In a tavern characters can just sit and talk, and time doesn't seem to flow except when needed. The characters just talk and watch for strangers and eat and drink. No important battle ever happens in a tavern, it's mostly just brawls added for the fun of it and to prove points (for example, character X is badass, how do we establish that? Have him one-punch some fucker in a tavern)

Besides, taverns are comfy. Are you american? Have you ever been to a real tavern with 2-3 friends? It's been some of the best times of my life, just fucking around with my bros a few years ago because life caught up. Fantasy is just escapism, and taverns are great for just that.

How was your weekend /sffg/? I did a lot of cooking related stuff and compiled some improvements for my writing

>after consulting a chocolatier, ive determined that giving my characters access to cocoa nibs is a bad idea because they're edible on their own
>when I get back into writing, im going to split the characters into two teams: the larger hunter team responsible for hunting, gathering and exploration, and the homestead team who are responsible for domestic and crafting tasks. MC should be domestic because of his skills and disability, but because of his insecurity he demands to be a hunter. whether or not his demand is permitted I still need to decide, as do I whether the homestead team is mockingly called the homestuck team since the homesteaders arent allowed outside a three block/one avenue radius without a chaperone

I'll never understand how this series got popular.

The same way your typical dogshit teen fantasy with a main character you want to fucking slap gets popular. He found target audience who self-inserts as his MC.

Besides, the line of thought is not exactly unique, even if most writers do not express it to this extent. See, for example, The Dresden Files, where MC thinks that if a female character friendzones him while fucking badboys (in case you may think I'm using buzzwords, no, I'm literal) that actually means she cares and does not want to hurt him through relationship which may gone wrong.

Which indicate that they are popular, not that they are good. This thread is actually quite diverse, with people that like Sanderson and those who dislike him. I personally dislike Sanderson because he's not actually a good writer, his claim to fame is his worldbuilding (you'll notice that most reviews praise his magic systems and intricate worlds, not his stories and ideas). I also don't think his rigid magic systems have any place in books, they would fit way better in vidya or board games.

Basically avoid everything notable which was written or started to be written in the last 20 years, except maybe Abercrombie's books (and then only if you like grimdark and nihilism and endless self-reflection of XXI century hipsters who pretend to be quasi-medieval characters).

Read Moorcock. While most people seem to prefer the Elric saga, I'd recommend Hawkmoon and Corum cycles more. Do note that while each cycle is 6 books, they are very concise and may take less pages togehter than an average fantasy doorstopper of nowadays.

IF you like dark and gritty books, read the first three volules of Glen Cook's Black Company cycle. Read the rest at your own peril, quality nosedives after that point just as page count skyrockets.

Read Poul Anderson's Broken Sword for a literal saga, or at least the closest equivalent in fantasy.

If you want less grimdark and more wacky bu epic high fantasy adventures, Weiss&Hickman "Dragons of..." trilogy is pretty fine. It is another story with awful sequels, though.

Le Guin's "Wizard of Earthsea" may be worth your attention. Only the first book is great, IMO, but many like the entire first trilogy. The newest sequel is trash.

The Dark Avenger's Sidekick by John C. Wright. It's books 4-6 of his YA series, Moth and Cobweb. Books 1-3 were about a paladin, these are about a thief/rogue.

It's far better than it has any right to be. I'm enjoying it a lot, although the main character is an attractive young Japanese girl and it's honestly kind of impressive how much prose cheesecake JCW manages to wedge into the story without being too lewd.

So I'm not saying that anybody should, like, go and read the current run of the Invincible Iron Man (written by Matt Fraction, art by Salvador Larroca) or anything, especially since most of it makes me eyeroll all over the place. I'm just saying: wow, Matt Fraction/Marvel, your kinks are showing.

Panels from #503 and #520 and #521; includes noncon-begging-a-bad-guy tropes and tentacles and mind control and torture and being a prisoner and omg how is marvel so racist villains and ableist terms and large images and spoilers. Because I find it really difficult to parse comics dialogue with every other word bolded like it is in the original, I've left that out.

So, first there was this, from #503, in which - for Reasons - Tony Stark is trying to disarm a nuclear bomb that Doc Ock has planted, but Doc Ock keeps distracting him:

And then this month there is this, in which - for Reasons - okay, you know what, the plot doesn't make any sense and it's so woobie Tony Stark that I can't deal, plus the choice of villains makes me cranky (why do they keep bringing back the Mandarin why oh wait it's because they're racist assholes).

It's not unreasonable to be at least a little dubious of women in general taking up the mantle of a genre that has, since its inception, been an essentially male form of entertainment. Would you reflexively attack a woman's personal value for her being skeptical of a man taking on the mantle of a leading, representative role in advocating feminist thought?

It's not impossible, either way, but the simple fact is that men and women are fundamentally distinct creatures. Different doesn't mean unequal. We don't all have to be identical- "exactly equal in every way"

>I'd be interested to hear a better one.

As you wish.

The series only makes any sort of narrative sense as a Chronicle of Dark Lord Dresden's Early Years. Basically as soon as he is offered evil powers in a convenient package Harry goes full drug addict, with the same "I'm still in control" mantra. Sometimes he/the text phrase it as "I will be okay as long as I follow my heart". Even though anyone who is not interested in a permanent stay in the lake of fire (or even a temporary stay in jailhouse) knows that following one's heart is the worst possible thing to do when facing a temptation.

But Harry gets away scott free with everything, because he's the MC, mafia bosses, ancient vampires and literal demons from hell are apparently unfamiliar with the concepts of lying and double dealing, and the whole deal with the muh dark power, muh threat of corruption only exists in the series so that the readers will have easier time swallowing the fact that the whole series is just a string of ass-pulled triumphs over foes half of whom should have been way beyond the MC's league and the MC getting power-ups. The author threatens bad consequences to conceal that, but never delivers said consequences (take note, I haven't read all of the series).

Or there is a simple fact, that the vast majority of women can't think of anything but who fucks whom, and therefore no matter the nominal genre, they write only romance novels, where relationships are the meat of the plot. There are a few exceptions, cases of genuine talent. But talent is rare. With a male hack writer I can at least expect some sort of the story in the same genre is advertized, a female hack writers will write romance/softcore porn and put "fantasy" label on it.

To its credit, that kind of archetype inversion does sound more interesting than what I'd been expecting based on the 5 or 6 books I'd read so far. Probably not going to pick it up again though. The characterization in those first numerous books were just so insufferably self righteous. It wouldn't surprise me if Butcher's sudden addition of new depth to the character didn't reach deep enough to scoop up that subject

That probably applies to men, as well. You're probably projecting here. Which is why the anti virgin narrative has stuck in popular culture like it has. You're a vulnerable, predictable, easily provoked demographic that serves as a convenient villain for the current globalist narrative development. You and your peers are the boogeyman that will be used to distract the population from realizing the banks and corporations are replacing and impoverishing them with 3rd world immigration.
