I think it laid the groundwork for "Magister Ludi", or "The Glass Bead Game."

I was dissapointed with the ending. The revelations about the difference between art and intellect and where the mystic fits in between them were intriguing though. (I found them to be true)

This is actually my favorite Hesse novel. SIddhartha was the first I read. You can really read Hesse's work in any order, but from Sid to N+G should be an easy transition.

And actually I think Demian lays the groundwork for a lot of Hesse's later works. At least the character archetypes he would pursue in pretty much all of his novels.
