Isn't that the point? It's for women to read and feel like something meaningful is on the page. They probably are genuinely feeling consumed by it, because their friends said it was 'meaningful' and 'deep' they have to buy it like a cosmetic or they will 'look bad'. All meaning is fashionable, the only difference is that people who read more and are harder to please will think themselves better people for reading something some literature professor said was cool instead of some women like us.
If it was a guy who looked like you and talked about problems you could relate to, he'd have a much higher bar to clear. For women, this is a social game.
