How does /lit/ actually remember what they've read? Do you take notes while reading? Do you use any mental tricks for recall? Or do you just read books from start to finish without pause?

I don't know how to balance note-taking and reading properly. :/

Yes I take notes, lots of them, but I never actually refer back to them.

If I can't remember it, it probably wasn't that important so I don't worry desu.

the best way of retaining information is to explain it to someone else

I find that notes distract me if anything. I just remember without the aid of any techniques.

The brain works by creating synaptic connections between neurons. So the best way to aid retention is to create as many of these connects as possible while you're reading. Relate everything you read to personal experience (which includes other things you may have read, seen, heard)

Minimize distraction. Re-read if your mind goes off track. Focus. This is a big problem nowadays with people's minds being accustomed to hyperstimulation by networked devices.

Best advice here. Connections aid memory more than any other trick.
