Why not? Muslims breed at a higher rate than Christians, but Christians convert at a higher rate than Muslims. Nobody, NOBODY converts to Islam; if you're a Muslim, you're highly likely to have been born into the faith. By contrast, Christianity has had huge surges of conversion on the African and Asian continents, and also in Oceania. It's been more than enough to offset declining membership in Europe and the Americas. And don't forget that certain sects of Christianity, like the Amish or Trad Catholics, breed at a higher rate than the overall population. So the Christians have both breeding and conversion on their side.

I don't see how it failed. Western society is steeped in atheist culture at this point and it's still doing great, despite what all the pessimistic Abrahamic dogmatists bleat on about. If population is in decline in the West it's only because people's standards have dramatically increased.
