Any good books, preferably fantasy, with no or barely any women? They break immersion and ruin stories, such as in asoiaf where all the female character arcs makes me want to kill myself.

It's fine with female characters in very minor roles, especially in brothels. But I'm looking for a story where they stay the fuck away from a majority of the book.

>> No.13207871

To expand on this, is the kingkiller chronicle full of women? I have read a few pages and like the style of writing, but I don't want to be disappointed when asoiaf-tier women suddenly pop up and fuck up everything.

>To expand on this, is the kingkiller chronicle full of women?
No, it's exactly what you're looking for, there's barely any woman. A few women are mentioned, mostly in minor roles early in the first book but they fade away as the story progresses. Also, The MC literally never has a girlfriend nor is he in any kind of relationship in the books released so far. Goes without saying, the books are also well written, so you should read them.

Talking about a book as a group before everyone in the group (that wants to) has finished it is a dumb idea. Keep the discussion going afterwards if you have more to say. If you don't, what's the problem?

>> No.13208118

>>13207842
Yeah. However I don't want to do a traditional reading group with deadlines every few days during the whole month. The idea behind /sffg/ monthly reading was never that the participants should spend all month reading the book, but that they should pick it up whenever they have some extra time and then discuss it at the end of the month.

I guess one solution could be to have the fourth week be discussion week. That way we'd have a while to discuss the book while most of the month is still spoiler free.

Sanderson is a decent writer in principle. His talent is wasted on the drivel he writes though. He has a great talent for making incredible worlds and telling compelling stories but he wastes his gift on shit characters, predictably bad plotpoints and as you noticed the targeting of a younger audience. Most of his works are also very formulaic to be "safe" and to appeal to as many young people as possible by never traveling outside of the usual YA tropes.
Im angry and saddened that he wastes his talent so much. He could be one of the greats, but chooses instead to play it safe and write to market.

hell Robert A. Heinlein was publishing books about incest and free love back in the 60s. Piers Anthony's Xanth had a book literally titled "the color of her panties." The Pern books had orgies and rape. Gor was just dismissed as "generic sword and sorcery" by parents.

In retrospect I read a lot of stuff that my parents probably wouldn't have wanted me reading. I remember one time I got some military technothriller from the library where halfway through the book the protagonist hooks up with arab female soldier and there was like a chapter long sex scene.

Flow My Tears is similar to a lot of Philip K. Dick books. Dude had two big fears that run through all of his writing, and one of them was the idea that reality was illusory or subject to arbitrary change. He wrote several books with that as a core theme; check out Ubik or The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch if you want more. Though Flow My Tears is a bit less weird and more dark than those, probably because he wrote it later in his career.

Late PKD is always an experience, not always a positive one. It's really hard to talk about his books at that point without talking about him as a person. He always had an edge to his writing, but by that point that edge had been honed against decades of mental illness, drug abuse, and massively dysfunctional personal relationships. His novels don't exactly get better across his lifetime, but I do think they get more interesting.

>What's with the last few years having lots of self-published work
Fantasy publishers pay literally nothing these days, <10k for most first time writers and the onus is on the writer to market and push the book on social media.
Self publishing is easier than ever in the ebook market and there have been a ton of indie printing presses popping up everywhere too. Investing in an editor or two and a cover artist might put you in the hole for a few grand but at least you won't be signing away most of your profits to publishers for a pittance in advance money.
In short, publishers everywhere are panicking due to dropping hardcover sales, which used to be their biggest source of income and are trying to push the cost everywhere they can including onto writers who have wisened up and realized Amazon is a game changer for self publishing. So we get an avalanche of self published books every year.

And as much as I try to avoid it, my brain constantly sabotages me with these shit characters that gain an unwarranted amount of emotional importance in my brain because I realize I'm just relating them to things that have happened to me. Anon pretty much all great authors wrote stories that were heavily inspired by or parallel to events that happened in their own lives. Writing a story that is influenced by your own life and character doesn't diminish its value; your story stands or falls on its own merit, whether it's influenced by subjective experience is irrelevant. The reader won't know it anyway, if he did it won't matter, and there's no reason to believe that making it less subjective will magically fix its flaws to begin with.

I've done that, anon, I've pretty much got a history/philosophy background which does help me a lot, I must say, especially in being able to come up with realistic conflicts. But, yeah, I just have a stupid problem of getting stuck on certain concepts, and I'm paranoid people will read into things.
Just to give a real but ridiculous example... I have a real thing for brown girls, so even though most of my stories are inspired by Slavic stuff (it's where I grew up), I always need to find some excuse as to why there are cute brown girls around. This kind of happens with a lot of other things, so I think part of it is pure autism and feeling the need to put EVERYTHING into any one story. For example, if I have to write for an assignment, or if someone pays me to write a specific short story, this is never, ever an issue, because I have no determination over the content.

He stirred first. I nearly woke as he rose, gingerly shook himself, and then stretched more bravely. His superior sense of smell told me that the edge of dawn was in the air. The weak sun had just begun to touch the dew-wet grasses., waking the smells of the earth. Game would be stirring. The hunting would be good.
I’m so tired, I complained. . . Rest a while longer. We’ll hunt later.
You’re tired? I’m so tired that rest won’t ease me. Only the hunt. I felt his wet nose poke my cheek. It was cold. Aren’t you coming? I was sure you’d want to come with me.
I do. I do. But not just yet. Give me just a bit longer.
Very well, little brother. Just a bit longer. Follow me when you will.
. . .But my mind rode with him, as it had so many times. . . swiftly we left the camp behind. . . We walked the spine of the hill, smelling the morning. . . there would be deer in the forested creek bottoms. They would be healthy and strong and fat, a challenge to any pack, let along a single wolf. He would need me at his side to hunt those. He would have to come back for them later. Nevertheless, he halted on the top of the ridge. The morning wind riffled his fur and his ears were perked as he looked down to where we knew they must be.
Good hunting. I’m going now, my brother. He spoke with great determination.
Alone? You can’t bring a buck down alone! I sighed with resignation. Wait, I’ll get up and come with you.
Wait for you? Not Likely! I’ve always had to run ahead of you and show you the way.
Swift as thought, he slipped away from me, running down the hillside like a cloud’s shadow when the wind blows. My connection to him frayed as he went, scattering and floating like dandelion fluff in the wind.
. . . “Wait!” I cried, and in shouting the word, I woke myself. . . my fingers buried deep in his coat. I clutched him to me and my grip sighed his last stilled breath from his lungs. But he was gone. Cold rain was cascading down past the mouth of the cave.

Unchecked run-away capitalism is the only scenario that can lead to the elite having an unbreakable hold on power, yet the streets being borderline-anarchy. Authoritarian-Socialist dictatorships have a tendency to enforce their arbitrary moral beliefs, or personal opinions, as the rule of law, resulting in people being gulag'd for being gay, smoking pot, or other "anti-social" activities. Cyberpunk requires that anti-social activity is more wide-spread than ever, yet there still be an unbreakable class divide. In short, the elite have to not give a single fuck what the poor do all day, as long as the poor aren't getting in their way. Corporatism fits the bill perfectly. A mega-corp isn't going to harm their own profit margins by wasting money on an anti-drug police force, when they can instead just start selling the drugs themselves, and enjoy the fat bonuses.

A world divided.
A queendom without an heir.
An ancient enemy awakens.

The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction—but assassins are getting closer to her door.

Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.

Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.

Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.
