they mean the same thing, but the wording in OPs is kind of supercilious, it's implying that there is a consensus that the thing happens despite x, and he is proposing that it could be the opposite. Taken literally it is just raising the possibility, but it usually has a tone of 'i have figured out this thing that is commonly misunderstood'.

OP here. I don't even mind the superciliousness of it that much. It's just so ubiquitous that I can't but roll my eyes whenever I encounter it which is almost daily at this point.
