They are the weird buddhists who believe meditation can make you superman. Buddhism is hilariously backwards though I don't know why people tout it. Buddhists believe in the death penalty.

Somewhat unrelated to OP's question, but can someone please explain to a layman the point of Buddhism if you don't achieve Nirvana? My understanding is that Nirvana is supposed to mean an end to continual rebirth and suffering, yet at the same time many household followers practice Buddhism with no intention of achieving Nirvana. So, why would someone practice some of the doctrine, while knowing they will just be reborn and suffer more of the same in the next life?

Or start with What The Buddha Taught instead of In The Buddha's Words if you like - or both.

Even if they practice without trying to reach stream-entry, and only for the intention of creating good karma for a heavenly rebirth - by simply listening to monks and supporting the religion they are aiming to create the karma that would produce an ideal rebirth in a future lifetime for awakening.
Although most Buddhists would agree that that is a very risky way to practice, and that it is much better to try and hit at least stream-fruition in this life.

There's also an entire later school that believes that if you have faith in the saviour Bodhisattva, Amitabha Buddha, and if you say his name at least 10 times, when you die he will help you find rebirth in his Pure Land in the next life where he will guide you to enlightenment.
Make of that what you will.

>Buddhists believe in the death penalty
there are stranger religious beliefs than believing in the death penalty
also, i don't think that's universally true
