Why is Lolita considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century?
Nabokov's talent as a writer aside, this just seems like a "gone girl" for 1955.

Someone could just as easily write a generalization about you and your tastes. If you honestly believe what you wrote, I don't think you should be involved with art of any form.

Why is the Iliad considered one of the greatest epic poems of antiquity?
Homer's talent as a multigenerational tradition of illiterate bards aside, this just seems like an "x-men" for the 8th century bc.

Because it simply is one of the best of the century? The bar isn't exactly high. It's not at all like Gone Girl.

Great prose and a moving story. What more can you ask for?
Also what's wrong with Gone Girl? I've only seen the film and it was alright. Maybe there's something in the novel I'm not privy to but it didn't seem like Lolita at all.

name three (3) books you like and for each explain what makes them (a) powerful and (b) innovative so we can establish what you even mean by these platitudes

Because of the controversy surrounding it, the bongs trying to get it banned in France, etc

It's not one of his stronger works imo. Ada, Pnin, Pale Fire, are all better

Not even close. It was one of the few bridges between modernism and pomo with an unreliable narrator and a use of dark comedy not common at that time. Nabokov is the missing link.

I've always found Nabokov to be more veneer than depth. His book "Invitation to a Beheading" that communicates essentially the same crux of Kafka's Trial but just demonstrates how sophomoric of a writer he was. It misses the infinitely recursive nature of the state justice apparatus. It creates a disjointed narrative when it's not necessary and doesn't add to the story at all. His prose is honestly mediocre.

> His prose is honestly mediocre
Beheading was one of his early Russian-era novels. His prose is top notch in his English novels. Lolita, Ada, and Pale Fire, certainly.

>> No.13144820

If you judge that book by how good its plot is you simply didn't get it. Go read some Stephen King faggot.

He didn't have a high opinion of it as compared to his other works. There's nothing present in Lolita that's really original except the style itself

The eloquent and unreliable narrator was relatively new for the times. Add to that the subject matter and you have a modern classic.

Opinion discarded. Death of the author is a meme used by old academists to force their shitty theories onto works of fiction. And Nabokov thought highly of Lolita, you fucking nigger I was supporting your claim.
