What are some books that explain why did humanity chimp out so much in the 20th century? Preferably, books that have theories other than "muh economics" and similar shit, because these are the obvious reasons, but i also feel like there's something deeper in that century that led to so much suffering.

Technology is a big one too. Wars and mass murders became a lot less personal.

Was WW1/WW2 really that bad of a chimpout compared to, say, the 30 years war?

Also there were a ton of deaths in, for example, the An Lushan or Taiping Rebellions. Chinese history is full of chimpouts.

It's only an increase in scale and development of more efficient ways of killing. So I wouldn't call 20th century a chimp out desu. As a species we still haven't figured a way for perfect co-existence and the world is getting smaller everyday.

The Jews instigated WWII, obviously, but I think most people would say that the Nazis still responded inappropriately.

Well, 80,000,000 died in a war that involved most of the planet in some way or another. WW2 is by a long shot the worst war we’ve had in terms of casualties and scope. So, to answer your question, yeah, it really was that bad. We’ve had destructive wars in the past but none that equaled it.
