They know they did nothing to earn their wealth except have some good luck and know the right people, but they can't admit it to themselves because it would invalidate their worldview, so to deal with the cognitive dissonance they act like the biggest pricks imaginable. Then they go home and down half a bottle of pills and get drunk until they can't remember their own names. Imagine being a rich man. Their wife is only with them for their money, she's probably fucking other guys on the side, guys more attractive and more pleasant to be around, guys who fuck them right. Their children can't wait for them to die so they can get that inheritance dosh. Their middle management are a bunch of conniving shitlickers out for their own salary, a pack of castrated yes-men. Their other employees simply hate their guts and look for any excuse to slack off and cut corners, even if purely out of spite. When people speak to them they're just looking for a way to tap into their wallet and make a buck off of them or to butter them up for a favor. No one is interested in them, no one loves them, people only want the money, which 99 times out of 100 was completely undeserved to begin with. All that pressure to show that you were worth the millions you made, and in reality they're a scared little brainlet who doesn't even understand the reasons underlying their own success except that they shook a few hands and were in the right place at the right time.

I can't fathom what could be more pitiable than a wealthy man.
