Trader's Tales from Golden Age of the Solar Clipper

It's a series in which absolutely nothing happens and every second is amazing. There's no action, no adversity and very little drama. Just a cozy story about our boy working his way up the crew ladder on commercial cargo space freighters and trading goods on the side.

The books are appropriately named Quarter Share, Half Share, Full Share and so on. There are 6 books in the series.

Book 2 is a bit of a mess and is an anomaly, you might dislike it if you're not into haremy/cringe storylines but the rest of the books are great.

Shades of Grey - Jasper Fforde: You know those mediocre YA series about oppressive dystopias based on peoples skin or eye color or some other bullshit? These books with boring edgy teenagers with an unwavering resolve to dismantle said improbable regime and blah blah blah... Hunger Gayms and Red Grinding and the like.
How'd you like an actually entertaining color dystopia book? One with an adult main character who just wants to get a job and maybe find a wife. And an actually interesting dystopian regime built not on an evil ruling class, but on simple blunt bureaucracy. Well this is it.

Guns of the Dawn, by Adrian Tchaikovsky
>set in fantasy version of the late 18th/early 19th century, with magic being a gift in the blood of noblemen, activated by the king branding you
>not-Scotland (Germany) has a republican revolution, goes nuts, and attacks not-England their equally-sized neighbour and longtime ally against the not-French overseas
> Emily (Elizabeth Bennet expy) is a minor noblewoman in a picturesque English town who constantly stands up to their shady governer, Mr. North (Darcy)
>the war is going well, but we need to conscript more men!
>the war is going well, but we need even more men!
>the war is going well, but in our desperation, we need a woman from each household!
>instead of sending off a servant, Emily goes herself because she wants to find her brother and husband-in law
>gets some shit training and is made an officer due to her birth
>instead of being sent off to the glorious fields where most of the fighting is, she ends up in the swamplands, where neither side is used to fighting there
TL;DR Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice volunteers out of love for her family and country to go fight in fantasy Vietnam when her country adopts female conscription, with barely any training, a musket, a pistol, and a sword (and without narrative buffs to make her physically stronger than male soldiers)

>because I'm basically shilling the novel now, have this excerpt on guns being an equaliser (though that trigger discipline):

Emily lowered her musket slowly, feeling the weight of it already familiar. Some of the others were complaining, saying their arms hurt too much to fire the gun again. One said, ‘I thought you soldier types got swords. Why can’t we get a sword? I reckon I could use one of them.’
Demaine wheeled himself closer to her. ‘I haven’t got a sword myself, soldier.’
‘But I could have one,’ the woman pointed out.
Demaine smiled at her. ‘There is a sabre behind my desk. Go and get it, would you?’
As the woman ran off inside, he reached out to Emily and took her musket, then reloaded it without looking, fingers practised and nimble. When the woman came out with his sabre, unsheathed, he was aiming at her.
‘What . . . what’re you doing, Sergeant?’ she gabbled at him.
‘You have a sword, like you wanted. So now what?’
‘Well, I didn’t mean . . .’
He did not lower the gun. ‘If you have a sword, then you must be strong, swift, nimble all at once, and you must have your enemy within arm’s reach. I am no good any more with a sword, but I can kill a man a hundred yards away just with my eye and my finger. A gun makes killers of us all, ladies. It will make the slightest of you as deadly as the biggest, strongest man, and you will never have to pit yourselves against him, to strike and avoid his blows and land your own. All you have to do is pull the trigger and he will be dead. And when your own death comes, ladies, it will not be from a man standing before you, pitting himself against you. It will come suddenly, and you will never see who has done it.’ He lowered the gun at last and gazed down at it almost fondly. ‘With one of these, ladies, and a good eye, I am as deadly as any man that runs on two legs – and so can you be. Practice is all.’

Nice rebuke you spacker

It's well documented that firearm tactics of old were greatly inefficient. Inaccurate firearms/projectiles and the widespread and overwhelming anxiety towards killing another man, enemy or not. In this case, the disparity between genders would certainly exacerbate the issue, but it wouldn't be the death knell of any army that wasn't already on an inevitable path towards failure. The most unbelievable part of that passage is the Hollywood-tier accosting by the Sergeant of Emily. An old officer wouldn't need to show off to shit-heel recruits, especially not female ones, and especially in such a modern fashion.

Three questions:
Are the sequels worth reading?
Are there other fantasy novels with similar literary merit?

Sir William's certainty in the righteousness of his and his friend Alen von Helsing's cause as vampire hunters is challenged by the knowledge The Merge brought, but that's nothing to what it did to Jane Alexander. All because she Merged with Alice Blake, a sixty-two-year-old nurse who had read the Vampyre Compendium IV cover to cover.

As she remembered her fellow gamers' casual dismissal of the fact that she was still alive, Jane became one ticked-off vampire. She was going back to Londinium to have words with Sir William and Alen van Helsing.

I finished it a week ago and while I would not call it terribly boring it was far from the most exciting read I've encountered. What I did find exciting was the feeling of exploring a vastly different world, which the book conveyed reasonably well. The whole thing was basically an exercise in worldbuilding. Everything, including character development (the captains relationship with his families) were there for world building reasons.

Yeah definitely. It gets a lot of hate in these threads, but that's mostly just contrarianism. It's not without flaws but it's definitely worth reading through at least once.

>it's about this soldier who pisses off a powerful wizard
>he's fleeing from this supernatural soldier race that humans can't compete with, and hides around the wizard's remote home
>soldier thing and the men it commands wreck the place and leave when they can't find him
>cue angry wizard, who is kind enough to enchant a sword to help protect the guy when he grovels, but screws him over when he does so
>the sword will make him unbeatable in combat; his life force is tied to it, meaning it'll keep him alive until it's destroyed, which it pretty much can't be ue to how potent the magic on it is; and can only be drawn and used by him
>however, after about a hundred uses, it'll be able to be drawn be someone else, and the sword will kill him when this happens, and the cycle repeats again for the next wielder, with them having about ninety-nine uses, and so on until it'll just be an unbeatable sword that any random can pick up
>obviously he kills the scary monster-dude, and then his commanders have to figure out what to do with this unparalelled sword-guy
There, spoiled about 2/5ths of the book, just like the blurb; it's not very long, and, again, it's max comfy, despite the whole soldier thing
