I just finished Black Mountain, Laird Barron's new detective novel, sequel to the last one he put out. I really enjoyed it.
>Recommend horror literature that you liked.
Pretty much Laird Barron's whole 'Old Leech Cycle' that weaves together a couple novels and collections of short stories. Blood Standard was surprisingly grounded for him, but Black Mountain had the same characters starting to brush up against the fringes of his more cosmic-horror-oriented works. I loved that aspect, where it can be read as a part of this series apart from his oeuvre prior, but having that background fills otherwise inconsequential characters and locations with sinister meaning.

It's weird and fun as fuck. Miéville's descriptions are vivid and his ideas are very out there so it's always a delight to see what he'll come up with next. It's definitely one of the best urban fantasy series out there. I'm still to read The Iron Council though, I'm not as interested in it because I heard it's all over the place.

Polarizing in what sense? Miéville has his ups and downs, his writing is something that suffers now and then because he doesn't have the same control over his style like the writers who influenced him and some editing would do him good, but he's pretty solid overall and his shortcomings were never something that made the whole suffer. There was a section in Perdido Street Station that made me literally cringe because of how bad it was, but it's still one of my favourite books.

People say he's difficult or confusing, and...I honestly don't see why. I'm not a native speaker and I could read him just fine. He's basically a pulp writer, with flowery prose but a pretty straight-forward narrative.

If it's about his politics, it's so mild that I don't even know why people made an issue out of that in the first place, or even highlight it when talking about him. When I heard about that I thought he was the counterpart to Terry Goodkind, but it's very predictable, like cops being assholes and the poor being oppressed. Even Snow Crash has more complex politics than Miéville. It's still pretty interesting though to see something like that in a fantasy setting, with the different roles of power between the races and etc, that's made as a crucial point to the story and not throw in just as flavour.

And then there are the people who hate him because of that Tolkien quote.

at the same time, I'm reading Codex Alera right now because pokemon is one of my guilty pleasures, and I'm disappointed how immediately Butcher gave up on the original premise

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

One thing I like about Mieville's politics is that he's enough of a true believer that he'll portray stuff that "supposed" to be bad but if you don't share his ideology it...isn't.

In Perdido Street Station for instance there was a scene where Bas-Lag's mayor (or whatever) negotiates with demons. I truly thought that it was just a neutral illustration of how the leader of a polyglot city had to be willing to work on a realist basis with unsavory "foreign" interests but apparently it was supposed to show how bad and amoral the city leadership was.

I just got done reading The Name Of The Rose and found it very entertaining and would suggest it as a easy read to anybody looking to tackle more "literary" works.

I am beginning to feel that historical fiction is effectively fantasy or science fiction. People in the past thought differently from modern man and had different beliefs and values and so on. For the modern reader the Aubrey-Maturin series might as well be on a space ship and the various devices of the age of sail might as well be technobabble gadgets.

What is the /sffg/ equivalent of Full Metal Daemon Muramasa? Plot summary:
>A Tsurugi is a living soul forged into a set of armor. They are among the most powerful weapons the world has to offer. All those who don them are known as Musha - warriors who are thus granted the power to soar the skies and wield blades that can rend even steel.
>Within the island nation of Yamato, governed by the Rokuhara Shogunate, rumors of a Musha clad in silver armor, only known as The Silver Star, are afloat: a ruthless silver tyrant that leaves nothing but destruction in its wake, massacring everything in its path without distinction.
>Unknown to the public eye, there exists only one Musha who would stand against the silver demon. A lone man, donning the crimson Tsurugi known as Muramasa, chases after his long-time nemesis, the Silver Star, cutting down both serial killers and agents of the Shogunate that stand in his way.
>However, his blade is not driven by the wrath of justice, nor will he ever label himself a hero. For his Tsurugi is none other than the crimson demon that brought hell upon the land of Yamato in ages past - the accursed armor known as Seishuusengou Uemon-no-jou Muramasa.

Speak for yourself. YA is shit that focuses more on the romance than the story. They also like to add a love triangle every time. There is also the habit that a single gril can overthrow an entire empire by herself with no help. Nothing bad happens to the protagonist, no rape, no limbs being chopped off, no torture, no beatings, their parents or remaining family aren't caught and tortured in their place, etc. Then there is the black and white morals, there is no GRI, our protagonist can be living on the streets and she never gets raped by the local gang, so when she meets Prince charming she is "pure" for him.

Now that I think about it every major character save for Glokta went through subversion that retrospectively made little to no sense. I'm all up for showing that thoughts, words and actions of humans don't necessarily match up but in good works character's inner truth emerges despite their conscious will but in works such the first law it's just blunt "people never change" and shit like that with little to no justification for it.

I've got another question regarding a book equivalent to a VN, in this case Albatross Koukairoku (or Albatross Log as I've seen it translated). It's basically a fantasy seafaring story about a ship full of eccentric characters. It's also notorious for having extremely complicated and difficult prose (pic related is a single sentence).
>Aboard the Albatross is an odd captain and an equally crazy crew. With no map in hand, they sail to unknown islands, meet ghost ships and cross paths with giant monster fish. No one knows where they are heading… including the captain. But they still all stay together since there’s no other place for them.
It has a very nice opening song. If you take a look at the video it should give a good idea of the tone of the work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5uZZimx6PM

By the end of your screed you've stopped discussing a genre and started criticising maybe three or four popular entries into a genre (and their unpopular imitators.) Even the bits you're angry about seem to have more in common with New Adult than YA. Young Adult is just a sci-fi/fantasy bildungsroman, anything else you're mad about is window dressing, and not typical to the genre as a whole.

in theory i don't mind these if only
the old wizard wasn't on the brink of death time and time again and didn't waste so much time on condemning human eaters when he himself employed them.
the prince didn't periodically forget about wizard's godlike powers;
the big bad warrior didn't decide to return and actually rule the kingdom just because;
the black(?) crazyfu didn't outright ignore the big bad warrior for no reason.
the wizard's ex didn't sit and listen to the most insane lies he came up with about her to make himself look good.

The character dynamics themselves were often interesting but a lot of core decisions were internally inconsistent for characters.

Hello, am Birdboi. I would like to clear up some misconceptions from this thread.

The reason I do not post does not have to do with hostility, as posting on 4chan at all should ingrain one with a certain expectation of hostility. I do not post simply because what would be the purpose to posting? I receive feedback on my map making through more map making dedicated communities. I would do the same with my writing, but do not simply because I both believe my writing to be categorically awful and because in the future my writing is what I wish to attempt to monetize. I keep my writing to smaller communities to receive feedback while working on the craft of writing, which I believe to be more conducive for improvement than posting in the ether of the internet. As well I do not want to spread my writing too far as I fear it simply becoming nonpunishable due to being littered across freely available public forums.

I think it is best that the thread drops its obsession with me. I am one of many hopeful writers to populate this image board. I am in no way special and am likely far worse than many. If people truly wish to contact me then some other service would be best rather than throwing speculation about me into the ether. I can simply provide such an online handle to communicate with me through if anyone is truly intrigued.

Thank you. I apologize for posting something off topic and I hope you all will forgive me.

Right now I'm noticing a lack of emotional intensity. First time things put me through the wringer. The first book was a lot easier to follow this time of course. I didn't get frustrated not being able to find locations on the map, kek (if there's multiple continents then give me multiple maps ree). It felt more like a normal fantasy story since I could keep track of events. Knowing the history already was nice.
