If that’s really by an 8 year old kid then he should really receive inspiration and materials to further develop his capacities, because he has great talent, no doubt about that. The image of the flash flood and the iguana are very good, and the end line “I am noon” is extraordinary.

>I don't get it? What's good about it? it's just a bunch of disconnected images

Imagery is by far the greatest aspect of poetry. Is more important than metrification, more important than rhythm, more important than rhyme, assonance, alliteration. All those things are important (well, sometimes you don’t need to use them: see free verse, or the poetry of the ancient Greek and Romans and most of Shakespeare, that don’t use rhyme), but imagery is really what sets poetry apart from most of the daily and serviceable prose.

A poem might be just a succession of images about a certain theme, but, if the images are striking and inventive, the work will be justified and pleasurable. See this sonnet about prayer (just several metaphors on the subject of Prayer):

Prayer I, by George Herbert

Prayer the church's banquet, angel's age,
God's breath in man returning to his birth,
The soul in paraphrase, heart in pilgrimage,
The Christian plummet sounding heav'n and earth
Engine against th' Almighty, sinner's tow'r,
Reversed thunder, Christ-side-piercing spear,
The six-days world transposing in an hour,
A kind of tune, which all things hear and fear;
Softness, and peace, and joy, and love, and bliss,
Exalted manna, gladness of the best,
Heaven in ordinary, man well drest,
The milky way, the bird of Paradise,
Church-bells beyond the stars heard, the soul's blood,
The land of spices; something understood.
The poem on the OP shows some quite inventive metaphors, especially for a young kind. He dosent simply say “I’m the sea”, or “I’m a river”, but actually makes the image specific: a flash flood. He doesn’t simply says that he is like most well-beloved animals (lions, tigers, dogs, cats, horses), but actually chooses the Iguana (not an obvious choice), and individualizes the Iguana, who is “tired after a big swim”.

Then there’s the last image of “I am noon”. It’s a simple image, yet I have never seen other poet use this great symbol as self-definition. What better way to describe a vivid, positive, energetic, happy person than with the image of the sun in the top place in the sky, with all its glory, dissolving every single shadow with its flood of light?

And all of that from – presumably – an 8 year old child. For me it shows great potential.

America is a fundamentally anti-expression, anti-beauty culture. Every male child begins their life in America by having their genitals mutilated to prevent them from feeling sexual pleasure. This is the kind of stuff that has serious permanent implications for a person's ability to express themself.

Haha are you serious? First of all, the defining feature of "Roman" poetry is meter. So right off the bat you're a pseud. Second of all his poem has almost nothing to do with Herbert, which is metered and rhymed.

And the much lauded imagery? It has everything to do with:

I am a mountain,
I am a tall tree, oh
I am a swift wind
Sweeping the country
I am a river,
Down in the valley, oh
I am a vision
And I can see clearly
Etc.

This is a bad poem. It’s exactly the sort of poem precocious 8 year olds are expected to write: just a string of dumb similes with line breaks. I’m pretty sure my mom has a whole box full of poems like this my brother and I wrote in elementary school.

I do like the “I am noon” line though.

We got a similar assignment in high school. The teacher basically gave you a template to fill in/customize a bit and then you had your poem. I did exactly the opposite of what the template told me to do to take the piss and the teacher said "wow I really like that poem Anon".

I now remember a line it had that went something like "I am being punished because I'm innocent" and the teacher loved it although it was the opposite of what the template told you to do. There are no objective measures for what's good. Not even standards to measure how technically good it is. It's pure relativism.
