Does the merit of L'Art français de la guerre (Alexis Jenni) lies on the prose or the story? I can't read French, so I'm planning to buy the translated version of this book.

Don't read this crap. It's a dry book marketed for the Goncourt, the equivalent of Oscar bait for films. Everything about it transpires fraud. Read Les Deux étendards. Also don't read translations, everything written in French that is good is good for the prose. You should be reading whatever only for the prose anyway, except maybe detective novels.
