I suspect people derive it from "my life doesn't matter, because no matter what I do, there's no lasting impact" feeling most people have. Cosmopolitan alienation. And they're correct for the most part, 99% people are now irrelevant from the perspective of the system. Pick any one out of that 99% and kill em, and it won't matter whether they ever lived, some random person can easily take their place.

Uniformity reduced practical value of human life to near zero because almost everyone is so easily interchangeable.

It indeed depends on perspective. Subjectively from your perspective, your life has value as potential you slowly waste to accomplish something of note. Objectively, you actually doing that is near zero. The nihilism of objective viewpoint is disembodiment from Self - "statistically, i amount to nothing". The paradox is that if everyone did that, everyone gave up on their tiny potential, then everything would halt. The truth is that your life has value, but in grand scheme fairly miniscule one. A single cell can just KYS one day, no big deal. If all cells did that, there would be no body. Rounding down the tiny value to zero is thus a cop out, and against the nature of life itself. Life is a meatgrinder where the 99% lose, but they still must try for there to be the 1% to succeed.

>> No.13087826

Lasting achievements have enormous value because those itself would are rare and have profound impact on future. If you killed einstein, you'd postpone nuclear physics, by say, 20 years. Now you reduced living standards of all people in that 20 year window, and those reduced standards made them produce less achievements .. and this projects up to infinity. The difference made by Einsteins death would be possibly felt even 10000 years later.

Of course this definition is sort of into-future forwarding recursion, but that's not problem - all definitions of value are ultimately recursive (it has value now only because it has value at some point future too).

And if 50% of people prior to Einsteins birth would KYS, chances are his parents would be among them. This is why nihilism is nonsensical in its reduction of individuals value. The individual value is miniscule indeed (you're very unlikely to produce vast-impact accomplishment), regardless, there is some potential. You can't just round it down.

One could argue that "so what, things got delayed by 20 years". But then it becomes Zenos turtle. Real nihilism would be infinite procrastination, nothing would be ever done. Reduced this way, nihilism is simply in favor of non-being of all intelligent life practicing industrial progress.

Of course you can ask "why industrial species need to exist in the first place?". And that's probably good question, whats the point for intelligent life to struggle? Dunno. Maybe it's more fun than grey goo bacteria multiplying with no higher aspirations than dumb copies of itself?

"I will never leave the house;
this night shall be my final night."
"O thou old dreamer of life and death,
come to the grave, that I may see you."
But it seems to me that these verses were written as the object of pity - in a word, as a tribute to the dead. They seem at first sight to relate to the lost soul, but more particularly for us to look for consolation in the sad sad death of the living.
It is difficult to define here how it all happened. When a man, the age of the poet seems to be nearly three hundred years, passes over into the next world, we may suppose that the time he leaves will be very short. In these last years it is very rare for him to die. When it happens he is quite conscious of this circumstance.
When he comes to life again afterwards he is still conscious of his old age,

That's a hell of a leap. You've gone from claiming God is an example of the eternal which gives meaning to existence, to all this loaded terminology. God has a son? Born in sin? What do you mean by sin? Do you have any proof for all this besides (presumably) an old book written by some utterly fallible Jews and assorted other Roman subjects? If not, why do you choose to believe that specific book over all the other ones, particularly in light of the errors and inconsistencies it's been found to have over the years? I'll believe all this stuff when Almighty God makes it clear He exists, and if he tells me the Bible is the correct sacred text, even better. Til then, why should I?

I think the best part is that subjective nihilism is perfectly ok. Especially if it becomes self-evident you'll be no einstein, nor his father (you are old and demented). Your tiny potential is nearly exhausted, you have nothing to pass on to younger generation, and living is only pain.

Frankly, limited form of nihilism would probably have positive outcome if anybody above 60 or so would just KYS if they think they have nothing going for em. Newton obviously didn't - he was lucid to the very end. But vast majority ain't like that, and suffer because of silly survival instinct which produces nothing but suffering for them, but also everyone else (by consuming resources).

“And there is no question that we are preoccupied by dying. But why? It is because when we die, we leave behind not only the world but also death. That is the paradox of the last hour. Death works with us in the world; it is a power that humanizes nature, that raises existence to being, and it is within each one of us as our most human quality; it is death only in the world - man only knows death because he is man, and he is only man because he is death in the process of becoming. But to die is to shatter the world; it is the loss of person, the annihilation of the being; and so it is also the loss of death, the loss of what in it and for me made it death. As long as I live, I am a mortal man, but when I die, by ceasing to be man I also cease to be mortal, I am no longer capable of dying, and my impending death horrifies me because I see it as it is: no longer death, but the impossibility of dying.”

Thats when life actually becomes fun, friend. When you see youre useless, you stop caring. You stop doing things just to achieve and you do them because they are fun. Well, it's a subjective fun for some, I guess - perhaps for those who perceived "accomplish something" as a burden their whole life was stopping them from having fun. But if we talk objectively, I don't see it. And even subjectively, people seem tormented with their inability to fulfill the burden (the need to feel useful, take pride in service/work etc), rather than the burden existing as such.

The boomer who truly has nothing left to pass on can have his subjective boomer fun, but objectively he's truly redundant now - just a drag on resources, objectively standing in the way ever so slightly by consuming resources otherwise available to those who can do something with it.

Think old skin cell apoptosing just to make room for young one.
