How do you feel that many "pleb authors" today will be reprinted in scholarly editions in the future, with critics analyzing it and adding explanatory notes to everything? How do you feel that we'll have Oxford World Classics or Norton Critical Editions of Stephen King or Harry Potter books?

We won't. But it all breaks down to money. I'm fine with having Edgar Rice Burroughs if it means that can help us have Laurence Sterne and Matthew Lewis. Plus you make the assumption that there'll be books at all in the future.

Do you actually believe that will happen?

It probably will. Publishing houses are not selling as much as they used to, so they're adding genre fiction to their catalogue as well, like how James Ellroy was recently added to Everyman's library, and His Dark Materials is also there. Now, I don't think they'll add Stephen King and Harry Potter for various reasons but they'll add some other genre fiction, too. Science fiction is long overdue for a literary treatment, anyway.
