I generally just use busts of various literary figures, rather than something specifically designed as a bookend.

Bookends imply shelves. I keep my books in stacked, flat packed rubbermaid bins. They don't get worn by the environment and have that new book smell forever.

i had some nice bookends that someone gave me as a present years ago. they were sky blue with some fluffy white clouds and a happy smiley yellow sun. they were made of wood.
after a while the books got too heavy and the bookends would slide so i put some non slip rubber sticky feet underneath them
then the shelf got too full and the bookends took up too much space so i put them in a box somewhere
i think i lost them when i moved out after a disastrous relationship
i miss them :(
pic unrelated but i have this picture in a book that was between the bookends in happier times

There isn't any more than three books in a stack. Usually just two together, that's what I mean by flat packed. I used to keep them upright in bins, but it seemed to damage the binding, probably because they're either too loosely or tightly packed
