Soo I was at Ihop discussing the ending of the new Avengers: Endgame movie when pic came up after I mentioned one of the jokes in it about cynical hollywood capeshit movies. One of my friends said that it's classist of me to assume that content directed at the lowest common denominator is 'bad', and that I should really do the homework and look at why what I think is high culture is 'good' since it usually amounts to white supremacy, cissupremacy, and heteronormativity. Do you think she's right? I didn't particularly enjoy the movie but I do think popular culture is bad, but I guess I should do the work and change what I think so as to be more inclusive.

I'm not sure how I'd react to that. There's a good chance I'd tell my friend to fuck off. There's also a good chance that I'd take another approach and inform him that the mass media, by definition, is only produced by the wealthy. Which means that the movie is going to be sterilized of anything promoting class-consciousness, and introduce a bourgeois mindset into the "lowest-common denominator" AKA the proletariat. So by making his argument, the friend in question is actually being a tool of the bourgeois-class, and therefore, an enemy of the people.

I mean, it sounds like your friend fell a bit far down a few rabbit holes and is lost down there but, fundamentally, they're not wrong. I've never heard an argument against casually consumable media that didn't boil down to hysterical reactionism or 'because it's bad'. I'm not sure I'd use those three particular terms to describe high culture (although two of them are objectively true, I'd call them more the scaffolding than the rose window), but 'high culture' is just a few dozen out of literally millions of flavors in the world.

You have a mind capable of regularly leaving the house at night, for absolutely no reason, despite being objectively and aggressively diurnal. Cognitive dissonance is the human condition, and we are all of us, at bare minimum, thoughtless animal instinct and sapient irrational synapse. Don't waste your time pretending any piece of a machine so complicated must be universally slaved to the other.
