Start with Silmarillion for maxium comfy lore background, then either go with The Hobbit or LOTR

Also frens check out my Tolkien soundtrack/ambient music project, mainly song themes from Silmarillion/Unfinished Tales

Silmarillion is like his version of the bible for the world in LotR and Hobbit

>> No.12875322

I've started with LotR and I wouldn't recomend doing it. Start with The Hobbit, wich is the comfiest. Then Silmarillion and LotR.

Start with the Hobbit and then stop.

It was intended to be a self contained story, but the Tolkien decided to do a Tolkien literary universe literally as a literal afterthought. He even rewrote the plot of a segment in the Hobbit to have it fit in. This is akin to Rowling biweekly tweeting about changes to characters a decade after the series was finished.

Proceed with silmarillion only if you are interested in stuff like star wars lore.

It's really not akin to that at all. He may have retconned the Hobbit a smidgeon, but LotR and Silmarillion seriously changed my concept of being and time.

Life in every breath.

Tolkien was a philologist who created languages and then he wrote this stuff to create a world for his languages

Start with LotR.
If you want the immediate prequel, read The Hobbit,
If you want the full lore to the setting of LotR, read The Silmarillion.

I'd say
The Hobbit > LotR > LotR appendices > The Silmarillion
You get the stories, they feel epic, then you come to find out these were just small pieces of a huge world.

This is pretty good, thanks fren

You start with Farmer Giles of Ham.

Hobbit

Children of Hurin

Sil

Then the rest of it.

>> No.12877845

Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion, optional Hobbit re-read, mandatory LOTR re-read.
Then tackle the rest however you choose.

The Hobbit > LOTR > Silmarillion is the supposed order.

Read a Song of Fire and Ice instead, he doesn't even go into detail about Gondorian/Rohan trade relations and tariffs.
