I am not certain it would sell very well though. The dykes who would be interested in reading it because of the gayshit will be put off and drop it when they come into the part where the girl loses to the cock, and the normal people will avoid it since they will think that it's gay propaganda or sjw-agenda or whatever. There will be a minor audience, though, of fetishists that will enjoy it. Like us.

Consistency, focus and depth. These last two are a bit at odds with each other, since focus means showing only what is relevant to the story (who the fuck gives a shit about a world map if they aren't ever going to leave the village), and depth means adding little details to story to give it more flavor. A good balance is what matters.

A 3 page description of setting material is telling not showing. Having characters make mention of elements of the setting in a natural manner is much closer to showing the reader something than it is to directly informing them of something via narrative voice. If I knew where to look I'd post that chart showing book sales for the various fiction genres to show you. But my point being it doesn't matter how much "boring scientific shit" you're dumping into your story if it's hard sci-fi because almost no one will read it regardless.

how are men supposed to be happy knowing that 3d will never even come close to such perfect renderings?
seriously, the skin, the eyes, the look, the way they carry themselves, the curves, the outfits, all of it can be made to absolutely perfectly match any man's tastes and preferences, while the best you can hope for in 3d is a handful of attributes matching what you'd like in a woman, and then rolling the dice on everything else and then on top of that adding in stuff like a personality that's random as well and the disgusting physical realities of a biological body like excretions and menstruation

it really gives me these deep existential feelings of bad luck and that men (not even mankind, but specifically MEN - males) are being tormented by some kind of deity

Hugo noms are out:

>Best Novel
>The Calculating Stars, by Mary Robinette Kowal (Tor)
>Record of a Spaceborn Few, by Becky Chambers (Hodder & Stoughton / Harper Voyager)
>Revenant Gun, by Yoon Ha Lee (Solaris)
>Space Opera, by Catherynne M. Valente (Saga)
>Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik (Del Rey / Macmillan)
>Trail of Lightning, by Rebecca Roanhorse (Saga)

Space Opera's good but it's basically just a lesser Pratchett style one joke book. I don't get the Ninefox and sequels hype, that series never clicked for me.
Spinning Silver's an eh retelling of a fairy tale, a bunch have done it better.
Trail of Lightning is really fun but I'm surprised it's got awards prestige behind it and the Wayfarers book is probably the best of the bunch.

I expect Calculating Stars will win, it's basically light alt-history but it ticks all the boxes and isn't held down by being a sequel

The Novellas category actually has way more quality and awardsy books than the novels this year

Okay, so across the top six categories:
>Best Novel
>Best Novella
>Best Novelette
>Best Short Story
>Best Series
>Best Related Work

I looked at the authors (taking the first author on the few that have multiple authors) and got the following:
>Total authors: 36 - six categories each with six nominations, taking first author for works with multiple
>Female: 28/36 (77.78%)
>Male: 8/36 (22.22%)
>White males: 2/36 (5.55%)

Is it just that men, in particular white men, aren't writing SF any more or is there some kind of selection bias for the nominations?

Yoon's book was shit compared to the first although I loved the characters. Ideas are introduced way too late and the plot was unsatisfying /m/wise.

Spinning Silver was pretty bad conceptually. Novik writes stories but doesn't really bring anything new or interesting to the table. Her work is inferior to a whole bunch of authors such as GGK, Susanna Clarke and Patricia McKillip. Katherine Arden, a recent author, writes better than Novik does with her eyes closed. And I believe I have read fanfics written by Novik that were bounds more creative and more interesting than these soulless commercialised sellout fairy tale retellings.

Of the recent new authors, only Ada Palmer, Curtis Craddock, Bradley P Beaulieu and SA Chakraborty have impressed me and nary a mention of these authors anywhere. And Jasper Fforde clearly deserves to win something if he was to get off his ass and write a Shades of Grey sequel.

I might try Kowal's book but by the gods has scifi gone stagnant.

I have to agree but remember that that fiction is a reflection of the era. Those classics you talk about were written in a time of a hope and space travel, eagerly looking towards the future. Now people want escapism and look inwards so it's no surprise genre's like fantasy and litrpg are popular. Sci-fi could see it's return.

There's not one original bit of writing in the entire book. The hack of an author, not being satisfied with just stealing the plot lines actually directly lifted passages from those books he ripped off.

This. Don't get me wrong, I've been to Japan three times already and there are some pretty unattractive women there in general despite what some weebs think, but on the flip side when you see a cute or attractive one they really stick out. Bonus points if they have that thick build with built thighs and whatnot.

The bad news is unless you're an attractive and relatively successful Japanese, White or a lighter shade of Mediterranean guy, you don't have a sliver of a chance with the better looking girls. It's why all the gaijin teachers and Military personnel there settle for the fuglies because that's the highest they can go in the food chain.

The Throne of Bones by Brian McNaughton is another good horror fantasy collection, but it does have a fair amount of edginess in some of the stories though it's tolerable because there's plenty of black humor as well.

>writing a fantasy story
>never read nor watched LOTR
>have this idea that I absolutely CANNOT read our watch them or else my writing will take too much influence from them and fade into the background with every other fantasy book
Am I justified in thinking this way, or am I being too cautious given how many other things already take inspiration from LOTR? I'm trying to figure out if I'd gain more than I'd lose from reading or watching the series.

If you're writing epic fantasy then it's going to be influenced by Tolkien if you've read him or not because ALL epic fantasy post-LOTR is influenced by it to some degree. But it depends on what type of fantasy you're writing and what the story is.
