The best material to understand the violence of the 20th century would be historical accounts of the 19th, but you may have the same questions if you don't go back to the 18th century. A lot of the violence was culminations of long chains of events that ran through the centuries until 20th technology allowed for some of the unrest to erupt rather than just boil over. This board doesn't like it when you discuss these things outright, even if you give textual references or recommendations so this is as far as I'll go on the matter, apologies.

I know at least about Germany, Thomas Man's the Magic Mountain, the writings of Ernst Jünger, Heidegger's diaries gave the greatest insight, least about the mentality of Germans during and after the WWI experience.

As for the 20th century it all starts in the 19th century. Okay, you ever wonder what was happening between the time period after the civil war and before ww1?

This is basically the gilded age and era of worker revolt.

So ww1 happens and it ends with Germany getting fucked over by the Treaty of Versailles

Then the great depression happens. Which creates the glitch in the matrix that allows the 1930s to become the era of revolutions. Capitalism is on its death bed.

And so the stage is set. How is the world going to end? The final battle between capitalism, fascism, and communism.

Its only a clown world right now to us because we are too used to complacency and comfort. Current happenings seem "unreal" and "clownish" due to a lack of familiarity.
