Start with political history and work your way into a camp. Most people just do the latter, but beginning with the former can give you a less naive understanding of your nation's politics. If American start with the politics of the late 18th century and work your way up or you'll just make baseless claims about the thinkers of old like most folks do.
t. American so I couldn't tell you what period to start in other nations, but the process should apply the same to most albeit with more or less content to sift through. It's usually safe to set your starting point around the era of enlightenment since most modern ideas came into more substantial form and discussion then and on

>Do not read The Republic first
I agree with this. I remember reading it before I read The Trial and Death of Socrates and have to say I regret doing so. The Republic itself is an amazing piece that challenges the thoughts of just and injust actions. I wasn't as interested in it until I had read The Trials then continued on reading The Republic, as it makes you have a sense of dramatic irony over Socrates defending it, while rethinking if the trials were even just actions.

Study religion and psychology first. People act out their beliefs; "I am hungry, I must eat."
Once you realize the needs behind many things as external memetic parasites / symbiotes AND have figured out a preferred state of being that does not necessarily align with anybody else's understanding, then you can read politics for the purpose of changing the world or to know where things are headed so that you can prepare for that.

Selecting a small sample of western thought to reaffirm your biggotry kek.

OP should read a bigger variety of points of view for sure. I'd recomend the Parallax View by Zizek, it gives a very good overview of politics, philosophy and some psychoanalysis. Politics can involve most subjects so, really, just read a ton of non-fiction, some fiction is relevant as well ofc.
