Nah, learning one or two other languages will actually improve your understanding of a native one. And if it's a closely related language (i.e. learning French/German as an English speaker) you will increase the vocabulary and etymological basis of your first language, allowing you to better understand the connotations and intimations of a wider range of words.

It's better to improve your native language first. Do not learn multiple languages superficially, like the polyglot and other pagans do.

Adolescent me certain felt focusing on my english (primarily from studying in an International School) greatly handicapped my ability in spanish; however I eventually decided to start writing chiefly in my native tongue, and reading in so.

A concentrated effort, surprisingly, worked to the point which I feel I can most benefit from the syncretism (due to lexical kinship) priorly mentioned.

Frankly, it's one of my confidence pillars. Native diction, however I did have a handful of british teachers so I've a tendency for the odd pronunciation from the other end of the pond.
Once or twice I was asked, both times by different brazilians, whether I was australian

1. by writing, i'll take the liberty of assuming it as "total-immersion" as you cant just write like a robot (maybe you are) without thinking about its culture, linguistic, etc, and this does affect your ability to speak/write/think coherently in your native tongue.
2. yes, but it takes intellectual effort. i am korean-english semi-bilingual, but after getting immersed in asian philosophy for a while, when i got in a meaningless heated argument in english, i kinda lost for a few seconds, if this helps.

I am a proud monolinguist and I adore my Mother tongue above all others, finding it to be the most immaculate. I will never learn another language. Non-native English speakers need not attempt any replies, whatsoever, for they are not truly initiated into the wonders of this glorious language and fail to understand its inherent, absolute beauty. I pity those not born to this language, the greatest of them all. The envy of all the world. Purely pitiful, are those born to my language and then discard this prized possession away to gain knowledge of inferior tongue. I'm fluent in my native Dutch and in English.
I've been able to speak English intelligibly since I was twelve or something so I can't really make an accurate assessment based on my own writing skills, but I don't think my bilingualism has negatively affected my writing.
When speaking however I do occasionally notice a downside.
When sentences form in my head whilst I'm speaking the concepts sometimes form in the wrong language. And I then end up with a figure of speech or expression that doesn't make sense. I then have to pause and adapt the sentence to the language I'm speaking in. Usually the pause isn't to long, except when I'm drunk, then it can be pretty disruptive and give others ample time to interject.

My understanding of English has improved so much after learning German. Grammar, sentence structure, etc. But especially understanding and thinking carefully about specific words, when I attempt translating or whatever, I notice how much more I've begun thinking about each word in English and why I use it and what I try to mean with each one

I've seen something similar, where someone was talking in their second language and then ate spicy food and retreated back to their native tongue when they were freaking out from the spice

No, it doesn't reduce it. But if you want to be really proficient in both, you'd have to dedicate time to both of these languages equally.
It's not like your vocabulary suddenly diminishes, but if you spend a significant amount of time with one language, you'll start thinking and wanting to express yourself in it a lot. You'll probably still be able to speak and write eloquently in the other lanugage, but there's kind of an inhibition when it comes to applying it.

I am a non-Native, English soon-to-b teacher. That's the career I am stuyding. So I recently got a "Bilingualism in the class" course. What out teacher told us is that the general idea nowadays is that the brain has a "compartiment" for each language. The compartiments can mix sometimes, but they don't affect each other. Actually, the more "compartiments" you have (languages) the more your brain works, therefore it's less feasible for you to get dementia and Alzheimer.

There's a limit though, right? I guess the question is how much the theoretical maximum level of vocabulary retention in the original language is outweighed by the potential etymology gains and ability to view your own language from the outside.

The brain training type Alzheimers shit I'll happily write off as being transferable to any skill which involves active thought/ information retention.
