>Philosophy in the 21st century
What happened? It was only 40 years ago when the greatest thinkers that ever lived, Deleuze, Foucault, Baudrillard, and Derrida, were still standing on this planet. Is the entire planet really an intellectual wasteland today?

>> No.12609357

Foucault is laughably stupid

They were great thinkers, yes, but "ever lived" is quite an overstatement

Well, it’s not as if these men lack knowledge or interesting topics to talk about. Regardless of whether you agree with them or not tbe represent the contemporary milieu of thought, or at least in the anglosphere. To engage with them is to understand the thought of many your contemporaries. I’d say that’s important. Considering how many great thinkers were defined by their contrast and rejection of their contemporaries, i’d say that a great modern thinker would have to be verse in the thoughts of these men, whether to reject them or built positively from them.
There are still thinkers engaging in postmoderm french thought nowadays, just look at Zizek or Land, but they’re not in vogue the same way the cognitivist and sociobiologist are. I believe that in order to make waves in our current intellectual climate, one needs an answer to them, scienticism has to be exposed in its own terms as inefficient or lacking. You can’t avoid them as of right now.

Baudrillard thought Deleuze was a brainlet, and probably wouldn't even be invited. Derrida would attempt to make an excuse to leave out of embarrassment. Deleuze and Foucault would have extreme sexual tension until Deleuze makes his choice to be with Guattari forever, leaving Foucault to slowly succumb to AIDs alone

But you're at least right in that the quality of those men was WAY ABOVE the quality of the people in your pic. The thing is, they are just the next step of those postmodernists you mentioned, who were themselves on the border of being mere celebrities. The guys in your pic? They're celebrities, through and through. There's no substance to them beyond the celebrity status. They are good with people enough that they are able to make waves with shallow readers, and that's it.

Philosophers still exist, and they will never be people promoted by any media. The media focuses on celebrities, not people who can create value for the world beyond having the chops to swoon pseuds.

None of these individuals are remotely relevant in the intellectual sphere. The 4 horsemen are more esteemed than these memes will ever be. You can engage with the entire spectrum of relevant philosophy and engage with all scholars without needing to know anyone in that goddam picture.
